Full title and description
Photography — Photographic-grade chemicals — Test methods — Part 5: Determination of heavy metals and iron content. This International Standard specifies a colour-comparison test method for detecting and estimating heavy metal and iron content in photographic-grade chemicals.
Abstract
The method is based on preparation of test samples and heavy-metals standard solutions, preconditioning, addition of sodium sulfide solution for determination of heavy metals or 1,10‑phenanthroline reagent for determination of iron, dilution, mixing, transfer to Nessler colour‑comparison cylinders and visual comparison of the colours to estimate content.

Scope
This part of ISO 10349 specifies a general test method for determination of the heavy metals and/or iron content of photographic‑grade chemicals. It is intended for routine quality control and acceptance testing of reagents and formulations used in photographic processing. Normative references include the general requirements given in ISO 10349‑1 and related parts of the ISO 10349 series.
Key topics and requirements
- Preparation and preconditioning of test portions and standard solutions.
- Use of sodium sulfide reagent for qualitative/semiquantitative determination of heavy metals.
- Use of 1,10‑phenanthroline reagent for determination of iron.
- Dilution, mixing and transfer to Nessler colour‑comparison cylinders for visual comparison.
- Colour‑comparison evaluation to estimate concentrations (procedure designed for routine QC rather than trace‑level instrumental analysis).
These procedural steps and reagent recommendations are described in the standard's text.
Typical use and users
Used by manufacturers of photographic chemicals, quality‑control laboratories, photographic film and paper producers, material inspection labs, and national standards bodies for routine verification of reagent purity and to screen for problematic heavy‑metal or iron contamination in photographic formulations.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 10349‑5:1992 is an International Standard that specifies a colour‑comparison method for the determination of heavy metals and iron in photographic‑grade chemicals.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers sample preparation, reagents and the colour‑comparison procedure (use of sodium sulfide for heavy metals and 1,10‑phenanthroline for iron) using Nessler colour‑comparison cylinders to estimate contaminant levels for routine QC.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Manufacturers of photographic chemicals, internal and external QC laboratories, photographic materials producers and conformity assessment bodies that check reagent purity and contamination in photographic processing chemicals.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The published 1992 edition is recorded by ISO as Edition 1 (1992) and has been subject to periodic review; catalog records show it as published/confirmed in ISO's lifecycle. Users should check the ISO catalogue for the most recent confirmation or revision status before purchase.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 5 of the ISO 10349 series (Photography — Photographic‑grade chemicals — Test methods). Other parts address general requirements and additional test methods for photographic chemicals.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Heavy metals, iron, photographic‑grade chemicals, test methods, colour comparison, 1,10‑phenanthroline, Nessler cylinders, ISO 10349.
