Full title and description

Determination of the resistance to jet fires of passive fire protection materials — Part 1: General requirements. This International Standard specifies a method to determine how passive fire protection (PFP) materials and systems resist jet-fire exposure and to provide comparative performance data under defined test conditions.

Abstract

This document describes a laboratory test method that gives an indication of the behaviour and performance (for example required PFP thickness) of passive fire protection materials and systems when exposed to jet fires. It does not assess other material properties such as weathering, ageing, shock or impact resistance, explosion resistance or smoke production. The method has limitations (for example complete I‑beams and columns cannot be tested because the jet characteristics would be disrupted).

General information

  • Status: Published.
  • Publication date: June 2021 (Edition 2, 2021).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 13.220.50 (Fire-resistance of building materials and elements).
  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (2021).
  • Number of pages: 43 pages.

Scope

Specifies general requirements and a test method to assess the resistance of passive fire protection materials and systems to jet-fire exposure and to produce comparative performance data (for example, thickness required to achieve a given performance). The scope excludes evaluation of non-fire behaviour such as weathering, ageing, mechanical shock or explosion resistance and smoke production. It also notes limitations on specimen type and size—complete structural members such as full I‑beams or columns cannot be tested using this procedure.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition of jet-fire exposure conditions and test rig requirements.
  • Specimen preparation, mounting and dimensional/geometry requirements.
  • Instrumentation and measurement (temperatures, heat flux, observation of failure criteria).
  • Performance criteria and reporting (e.g., required PFP thickness, failure modes, time-to-failure).
  • Limitations and exclusions (properties not assessed and types of specimens not suitable for this method).
  • Guidance on interpretation of results for comparative assessment of PFP materials/systems.

Typical use and users

Used by testing laboratories, PFP manufacturers, engineering consultants, classification bodies and asset owners/operators to evaluate and compare passive fire protection materials and system performance under jet-fire conditions, and to support specification, procurement and design decisions for industrial installations where jet fires are a credible hazard.

Related standards

ISO 22899 is a multi-part series. Part 1 is the general requirements/test method (this standard). Guidance on test method selection and implementation is being developed as ISO 22899‑2 (Draft/Dis) and complements Part 1; ISO 22899‑3 provides extended test requirements for severe or specialised cases (published as ISO 22899‑3:2025). The 2007 edition of ISO 22899‑1 was withdrawn and replaced by this 2021 edition.

Keywords

jet fire; passive fire protection; PFP; test method; fire resistance; hydrocarbon fire; test rig; thermal insulation; fire testing; ISO 22899.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 22899‑1:2021 is an ISO test standard that defines general requirements and a laboratory method to determine the resistance of passive fire protection materials and systems to jet-fire exposure.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers test setup, specimen preparation, instrumentation, performance criteria and reporting for jet-fire resistance tests. It does not assess non-fire properties (e.g., weathering, ageing, mechanical shock, explosion resistance or smoke production) and it excludes some specimen types that would alter the jet characteristics (for example full I‑beams or columns).

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Testing laboratories, product manufacturers, fire and structural engineers, classification societies and asset owners who need comparative performance data for PFP materials and systems in environments where jet fires are a hazard.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The 2021 edition (Edition 2) is the current published version; it superseded and replaced ISO 22899‑1:2007, which was withdrawn when the 2021 edition was published.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — ISO 22899 is a multi‑part series. Part 1 is the general requirements (this standard). Part 2 is being developed to give guidance on test method selection and implementation (DIS/working draft), and Part 3 provides extended test requirements for more severe or specialised test situations (published 2025).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Jet fire, passive fire protection (PFP), fire resistance testing, test method, hydrocarbon fire, thermal insulation, performance criteria, ISO 22899.
