Basic and safety principles for man-machine interface, marking and identification. Identification of electrical equipment terminals, conductor terminations and conductors
Full title and description
GOST 33542-2015 — "Road vehicles. Safety requirements and test methods for rear underrun protective devices" (translation of Russian title). This national standard specifies safety requirements, dimensional, strength and attachment provisions, and test methods for rear underrun protective devices (RUPDs) intended to prevent passenger cars and light vehicles from underriding the rear of heavy goods vehicles and trailers in the event of a collision.
Abstract
This standard defines the design, installation, strength and performance test requirements for rear underrun protective devices fitted to trucks, tractors and semi-trailers. It sets dimensional limits, loading conditions, test procedures and acceptance criteria to ensure adequate protection against rear underrun in road accidents. The requirements cover static and dynamic tests, corrosion protection and marking/identification of the device.

Scope
GOST 33542-2015 applies to rear underrun protective devices (RUPDs) installed on trucks, road tractors and trailers to reduce the risk of underrun by passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. It covers requirements for geometry, clearances, strength under specified loading conditions, mounting provisions and tests to verify performance, as well as marking and documentation. The standard is intended for use by vehicle and trailer manufacturers, component suppliers, testing laboratories and regulatory bodies responsible for vehicle safety compliance.
Key topics and requirements
- Dimensional requirements: specified heights and clearances from the ground and vehicle rear to ensure effective engagement with striking vehicles.
- Strength and load tests: static and quasi-static loading conditions applied to the protection beam to verify deformation and structural integrity limits.
- Energy absorption and deformation criteria: permissible deflection under applied loads and residual deformation limits after testing.
- Mounting and attachment: requirements for secure attachment to vehicle structure and assessment of mounting brackets under load.
- Corrosion resistance and durability: protective coatings and materials to maintain performance over vehicle lifetime.
- Marking and documentation: identification plates, manufacturer information and test reports to accompany the device.
- Test procedures: prescribed test setup, load application points, measurement methods and acceptance criteria.
Typical use and users
Primary users are vehicle manufacturers, trailer and body builders, component suppliers, certification and testing laboratories, vehicle inspection authorities and regulators. Design and safety engineers use the standard to develop compliant rear underrun guards; testing organizations apply the test methods to certify conformity; fleet operators and maintenance teams reference the standard for retrofitting and inspection.
Related standards
Related normative documents include other national and international standards on underrun protection and vehicle safety, such as UNECE regulations governing rear underrun protection, national GOSTs on vehicle components and corrosion testing, and standards addressing occupant protection and crashworthiness. Vehicle manufacturers typically apply GOST 33542-2015 alongside applicable UNECE regulations and regional technical requirements.
