Full title and description
GOST R 70042-2022 — Symmetrical telecommunication cables for broadband digital communication. General specifications (Russian: ГОСТ Р 70042-2022. Кабели связи симметричные для сетей широкополосного доступа. Общие технические условия).
Abstract
This standard establishes general technical requirements, constructional and performance characteristics, test methods and marking/documentation rules for symmetrical (twisted‑pair) telecommunication cables intended for broadband access networks and related applications. It is aimed at ensuring interoperability, electrical and mechanical performance up to the specified frequency range and compatibility with remote power delivery used in access and LAN installations.
General information
- Status: Active / introduced into force (implemented 1 September 2022).
- Publication date: 1 September 2022 (approved by the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology by Order No. 149‑ст on 23 March 2022).
- Publisher: Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology (Rosstandart); developed by VNIICP and submitted by Technical Committee TC 046 "Cable products".
- ICS / categories: 33.120.20 — Wires and symmetrical cables (telecommunication cabling).
- Edition / version: Edition 2022 (first introduction).
- Number of pages: 46 pages (published electronic/pdf).
Scope
The standard applies to symmetrical telecommunication cables intended for broadband access networks, intended to operate in the frequency range up to 100 MHz and supporting nominal remote powering voltages up to 145 V and 225 V AC (50 Hz) or up to 200 V and 315 V DC. It specifies principal construction requirements, electrical and mechanical characteristics, environmental and ageing tests, and test methods needed to verify conformity.
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and classification of symmetrical cable types for broadband access (designs: unscreened, screened, pair/quad constructions).
- Electrical performance limits and measurement methods (attenuation, near‑end and far‑end crosstalk, characteristic impedance) for operation up to 100 MHz.
- Mechanical and climatic performance: tensile, bending, crush, temperature and ageing tests and acceptance criteria.
- Requirements for insulation, conductor and sheath materials, flammability/smoke properties where applicable, and marking/identification.
- Compatibility with remote power delivery (PoE/remote powering) within the specified nominal voltages and related verification tests.
- Test methods, sampling rules and documentation (test reports, conformity records and technical product information).
Typical use and users
Intended users include cable manufacturers, telecommunications equipment vendors, network designers and integrators, installation contractors, test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies. Typical applications are broadband access networks, customer‑premises LAN/backbone cabling and installation environments requiring compliance with Russian national technical requirements.
Related standards
Related and referenced documents commonly used with this standard include national GOST documents for communication cables (for example other GOST R cable specifications) and international sectional specifications such as the IEC 61156 series (multicore and symmetrical pair/quad cables) for detailed transmission and test methods; manufacturers and labs often consult these standards in parallel.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: GOST R 70042-2022 is the Russian national standard that sets general technical specifications for symmetrical (twisted‑pair) telecommunication cables used in broadband digital communication and access networks.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers constructional requirements, electrical and mechanical characteristics, climatic/ageing tests, marking and documentation, and test methods for cables intended to operate up to 100 MHz and to support defined remote powering voltages.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Cable manufacturers, network designers and installers, test laboratories, product certification and conformity assessment organizations, and regulatory bodies involved in telecommunications infrastructure.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: This is a current, active standard introduced into force on 1 September 2022 (approved 23 March 2022 by Rosstandart, Order No. 149‑ст). It was introduced for the first time in 2022.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is a standalone national specification for symmetrical broadband access cables but is commonly used alongside other GOST R cable standards and international sectional specifications (for example, the IEC 61156 family) that address detailed transmission categories and sectional test requirements.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Symmetrical cable, twisted pair, broadband access, attenuation, crosstalk, remote powering, PoE, test methods, marking.
