Full title and description

GOST 34759-2021 — Railway rolling stock. Normative limits of railway track interaction and test methods. The standard (Russian: «Железнодорожный подвижной состав. Нормы допустимого воздействия на железнодорожный путь и методы испытаний») defines permissible levels of interaction between rolling stock and the track and specifies experimental and calculation–experimental test methods for measuring those interaction indicators.

Abstract

This interstate (GOST) standard applies to railway rolling stock of 1520 mm gauge and establishes allowable values for parameters that characterise the impact of rolling stock on the track and turnouts, together with methods for their experimental determination and calculation–experimental assessment when vehicles operate at design speeds up to 69.44 m/s (250 km/h) inclusive. It is intended to be used to determine speed restrictions and operational limits for rolling stock on different types of track superstructure.

General information

  • Status: Active / In force.
  • Publication date: Approved 6 October 2021; originally scheduled for entry into force 1 February 2022 but the date of introduction was postponed to 1 February 2023 (with right of early application).
  • Publisher: Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart) / issued as an interstate (MGS) standard.
  • ICS / categories: Railway engineering — rolling stock (OKC/ICS: 45.060).
  • Edition / version: 2021 (GOST 34759-2021).
  • Number of pages: 32 pages (typical published edition).

Scope

Applies to railway rolling stock of the 1520 mm gauge. The standard sets normative limits for forces and other interaction indicators transmitted from wheelsets and bogies to rails and turnouts, prescribes test objects and instrumentation, gives procedures for arranging test sections and measurement points, and describes procedures for processing and analysing measurement matrices. It covers vehicle speeds up to 69.44 m/s (250 km/h) and may be used to determine allowable speeds and operational restrictions for rolling stock on track structures of different designs.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definitions of key interaction indicators between rolling stock and track (vertical and lateral wheel-rail forces, frame loads, dynamic amplification factors, etc.).
  • Normative (permissible) limit values for those indicators used to assess acceptability of rolling stock for given track structures.
  • Requirements for test objects, instrumentation (strain gauge arrangements, force transducers, speed measurement), and calibration procedures.
  • Arrangement of test sections and test cross-sections (including recommended spacing and positioning in straight track and curves).
  • Experimental procedures: single-pass and multi-pass tests, data acquisition, formation of measurement matrices and statistical processing.
  • Calculation–experimental methods for assessing interaction indicators where direct experimental data are partially unavailable.
  • Guidance for using results to define speed restrictions and operational limits for specific track superstructure types.

Typical use and users

Used by rolling-stock manufacturers, railway design organisations, track engineering departments, testing laboratories, certification bodies and infrastructure managers. Typical applications include pre‑acceptance dynamic testing of new or modified rolling stock, track-rolling-stock compatibility studies, setting speed restrictions for specific vehicle-track combinations, and regulatory compliance or certification activities.

Related standards

References and related documents include several national and interstate standards on rolling-stock strength and dynamic properties and on test methods—examples cited in the standard and related materials include GOST 33788-2016, GOST 34093-2017, GOST 34763.2-2021 (bogie acceptance and test methods), and earlier national documents such as GOST R 55050-2012 (noting that the introduction of GOST 34759-2021 was indicated as cancelling or replacing provisions of some earlier documents). The standard also cross‑refers to other rolling-stock and testing standards used for instrumentation and procedure details.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: GOST 34759-2021 is an interstate standard that defines permissible limits of the impact of railway rolling stock on the track and prescribes experimental and calculation–experimental test methods for measuring those impacts.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers definitions of interaction indicators (forces and derived parameters), normative limit values, instrumentation and test‑section arrangements, test procedures and data processing methods for rolling stock on 1520 mm gauge track at speeds up to 69.44 m/s (250 km/h).

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Rolling-stock manufacturers, test laboratories, infrastructure owners and operators, certification bodies, and design organisations that need to evaluate vehicle‑track compatibility or to set operational speed limits.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: It is current (in force). The document was approved on 6 October 2021 and its entry into force was adjusted—originally planned for 1 February 2022 but moved to 1 February 2023 (with right of early application). Some earlier national standards and provisions (for example certain parts of GOST R 55050-2012) were intended to be superseded or cancelled where overlapping.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is part of a group of GOST documents addressing rolling-stock technical requirements, dynamic and strength testing and bogie/vehicle specifications; related 2021-era standards include several GOSTs covering bogies, freight- and passenger-rolling stock and dynamic test procedures.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Railway rolling stock; wheel-rail interaction; permissible impact; test methods; 1520 mm gauge; dynamic testing; speed limitation; turnout loads.
