Full title and description

STB BS ISO 11119-2:2020 + A1:2023 — Gas cylinders. Design, construction and testing of refillable composite gas cylinders and tubes — Part 2: Fully wrapped fibre reinforced composite gas cylinders and tubes up to 450 L with load-sharing metal liners (ISO 11119-2:2020 with Amendment 1:2023).

Abstract

This document specifies minimum requirements for materials, design, construction, workmanship, manufacturing processes, examination and factory testing of type‑3 fully wrapped fibre‑reinforced composite cylinders or tubes with a load‑sharing metal liner (including composite reinforcement on cylindrical portion and dome ends) intended for storage and conveyance of compressed or liquefied gases, with water capacities up to 450 L and a minimum design life of 15 years. The amendment A1:2023 updates the 2020 edition.

General information

  • Status: Published (International Standard) with Amendment 1 published 2023; adopted as BS ISO 11119-2:2020+A1:2023.
  • Publication date: ISO edition published November 2020; Amendment 1 published May 2023; BS adoption listed 8 August 2023.
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO); adopted/published in British Standards form by BSI as BS ISO 11119-2:2020+A1:2023.
  • ICS / categories: 23.020.35 (Gas cylinders).
  • Edition / version: Edition 3 (ISO 11119-2:2020) with Amendment 1 (2023).
  • Number of pages: BS listing shows 52 pages (BS adoption); the ISO base document is 43 pages plus a 1‑page amendment.

Scope

Applies to type‑3 fully wrapped fibre‑reinforced composite cylinders and tubes with a load‑sharing metal liner and composite reinforcement on the cylindrical portion and dome ends, for water capacities up to 450 L, intended for storage and conveyance of compressed or liquefied gases. The standard specifies minimum requirements for materials, design, construction, manufacturing, inspection and testing at time of manufacture. It does not apply to cylinders with welded liners and does not address removable protective sleeves.

Key topics and requirements

  • Design principles and allowable stresses for type‑3 fully wrapped composite cylinders (load‑sharing metal liners).
  • Material requirements for liners and composite reinforcement (carbon, aramid, glass fibres or mixtures) and matrix systems.
  • Manufacturing and workmanship controls, including filament winding/overwrapping processes and liners handling.
  • Factory examination and non‑destructive testing methods, plus pressure and burst testing requirements.
  • Minimum design life (typically 15 years) and service/performance considerations.
  • Limitations and exclusions (not applicable to welded liners; removable protective sleeves not covered).

Typical use and users

Used by composite gas cylinder manufacturers, design and R&D engineers, conformity assessment bodies, test laboratories, procurement/specification teams for gas supply and transport, and national regulators. It is applied where lightweight, high‑performance refillable composite cylinders (type 3) with load‑sharing metal liners are required for compressed or liquefied gases.

Related standards

Part of the ISO 11119 series on composite gas cylinders; closely related documents include ISO 11119‑1 (hoop‑wrapped cylinders), ISO 11119‑3 (fully wrapped with non‑load‑sharing liners or without liners) and ISO 11119‑4 (fully wrapped with load‑sharing welded liners). Periodic inspection/re‑test guidance is covered by ISO 11623; ISO 11439 is relevant for cylinders intended as natural gas vehicle (NGV) fuel containers.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 11119‑2:2020 (with Amendment 1:2023) is an international standard specifying requirements for type‑3 fully wrapped fibre‑reinforced composite refillable gas cylinders and tubes with load‑sharing metal liners up to 450 L water capacity.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers materials, design, construction, manufacturing processes, factory examination and testing at the time of manufacture for these composite cylinders, including fibre and matrix choices, liner considerations, pressure testing and minimum design life. It excludes welded‑liner cylinders and removable protective sleeve design/performance.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Cylinder manufacturers, design engineers, test laboratories, conformity assessment bodies, gas suppliers, purchasers specifying composite cylinders and regulators responsible for gas containment and transport safety.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The ISO 11119‑2 third edition was published in November 2020 and has Amendment 1 published in May 2023; it is the current published edition with that amendment. National adoptions (for example BSI's BS ISO 11119‑2:2020+A1:2023) were published subsequently. ISO work items indicate the series is subject to periodic review and ongoing development.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — ISO 11119 is a multi‑part series dealing with refillable composite gas cylinders and tubes (Parts 1–4 and related documents). Each part addresses different cylinder constructions (hoop‑wrapped, fully wrapped with various liner types, welded liners, etc.).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: composite cylinder, fully wrapped, load‑sharing liner, type 3, filament winding, design life, cylinder testing, ISO 11119‑2, BSI adoption.
