Full title and description

ISO 10075-2:2024 — Ergonomic principles related to mental workload — Part 2: Design principles. This International Standard gives guidance on design principles for work systems, task and equipment design (including robotics and intelligent autonomous systems), workplace layout and working conditions, with emphasis on mental workload and its effects as specified in ISO 10075-1.

Abstract

This document provides guidance for designing work and the use of human capacities to achieve optimal working conditions regarding health and safety, well‑being, performance and effectiveness. It addresses prevention of both overload and underload and focuses on technical, organisational and social design factors. It does not cover measurement methods or selection and training issues. The guidance applies to all kinds of human work activities and is intended for designers, employers, workers and their representatives.

General information

  • Status: Published.
  • Publication date: July 2024 (published 10 July 2024 in ISO listings).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 13.180 — Ergonomics.
  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (2024).
  • Number of pages: 24 pages (ISO official listing). Note: national/adopted documents (EN, DIN, national translations) may show different pagination in their local publications.

Scope

ISO 10075-2:2024 applies to the design of work systems and the use of human capacities with the aim of providing optimal working conditions in terms of health, safety, well‑being, performance and effectiveness. It covers design of tasks, equipment (including robotics and intelligent autonomous systems), workplace layout and working conditions while taking social and organisational factors into account. The standard explicitly excludes measurement methods and issues of personnel selection or training.

Key topics and requirements

  • Design principles to prevent mental overload and underload and to foster facilitating effects described in ISO 10075-1.
  • Guidance for task design, workload distribution and information presentation to match human capacities.
  • Equipment and interface design considerations, including aspects relevant to robotics and intelligent/autonomous systems.
  • Workplace layout and environmental factors affecting mental workload (organisational and social elements included).
  • Recommendations for organisational design and working conditions to support health, performance and well‑being.
  • Explicit exclusion of measurement methods and of selection/training topics — the standard focuses on design.

Typical use and users

Intended users include system and equipment designers, human factors and ergonomics practitioners, HMI/HCI designers, occupational health and safety professionals, employers, work‑system planners and worker representatives. The standard is used when designing new work systems or redesigning existing systems to address mental workload and its effects.

Related standards

ISO 10075-1 (General issues, concepts, terms and definitions) is the companion normative part providing the conceptual basis for mental workload. ISO 10075-3 covers principles and requirements concerning methods for measuring and assessing mental workload (ISO 10075-3:2004 currently in the ISO portfolio and under review/maintenance in some jurisdictions). Users commonly consult these parts together when addressing mental workload in design and assessment projects.

Keywords

mental workload, ergonomics, design principles, work systems, task design, workplace design, human factors, human–machine interaction, robotics, intelligent systems, overload, underload, organisational factors.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 10075-2:2024 is an ISO International Standard that provides design principles related to mental workload for work systems, equipment and workplace design. It is the second part of the ISO 10075 series.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers guidance for designing tasks, equipment (including robotics and intelligent systems), workplaces and working conditions to optimise health, safety, well‑being and performance by preventing overload and underload. It does not provide measurement methods nor does it address selection or training.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: System and equipment designers, ergonomists, occupational health and safety professionals, HMI/HCI designers, employers and worker representatives use it to inform design and redesign of work systems.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 10075-2:2024 is the current (second) edition published in 2024; it supersedes ISO 10075-2:1996.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is part of the ISO 10075 series. Part 1 covers general issues, concepts and definitions (ISO 10075-1) and Part 3 addresses measurement methods and assessment principles (ISO 10075-3). These parts are intended to be used together where appropriate.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Mental workload, ergonomics, work design, task design, workplace design, human factors, overload, underload, human–machine interaction, intelligent systems.
