Full title and description

ISO 10111:2019 — Metallic and other inorganic coatings — Measurement of mass per unit area — Review of gravimetric and chemical analysis methods. This International Standard gives guidance and describes a range of gravimetric and chemical analysis procedures for determining the mass per unit area (surface density) of a variety of inorganic coatings applied by processes such as anodizing, electrodeposition, hot-dip galvanizing and chemical or physical vapour deposition.

Abstract

A concise review of established gravimetric and chemical analysis procedures used to determine the average surface density of inorganic coatings over a measured area. Procedures include dissolution-based gravimetric methods, weighing of uncoated and coated specimens, and analytical/instrumental chemical methods following coating dissolution. Measurement uncertainties are not generally provided in this document except where methods (for example in ISO 3892) do specify them.

General information

  • Status: Published.
  • Publication date: January 2019 (Edition 2, 2019-01).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 25.220.20 (Surface treatment); 25.220.40 (Metallic coatings).
  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (2019).
  • Number of pages: 11 (ISO published PDF).

Scope

Provides guidelines for determining the average surface density (mass per unit area) of anodic oxide and other inorganic coatings using gravimetric and chemical analysis methods that have been standardized at national or international level. The standard describes a variety of procedures applicable to coatings deposited autocatalytically, mechanically, by chemical conversion, by electrodeposition, by hot-dip galvanizing and by chemical or physical vapour deposition. Measurement uncertainties are generally not given in this document except for the gravimetric method described in ISO 3892.

Key topics and requirements

  • Overview of gravimetric procedures based on chemical or electrochemical dissolution of coating or substrate to determine coating surface density.
  • Procedures for direct weighing of uncoated substrate and coated specimen to calculate mass per unit area.
  • Analytical/instrumental chemical methods that determine coating mass after dissolution (spectroscopy, titration, etc.).
  • Guidance on applicability by coating type and deposition method; safety considerations for reagents used in some gravimetric procedures (noted in related gravimetric standards).
  • Reference to ISO 3892 for the gravimetric method where measurement uncertainty is specified.

Typical use and users

Used by coatings laboratories, quality-control and inspection personnel in manufacturing, metallurgical and surface-treatment industries, test-house technicians, standards committees and researchers who need standardized procedures to report or verify coating mass per unit area for specifications, acceptance testing and comparisons between methods.

Related standards

ISO 3892 (Conversion coatings on metallic materials — Determination of coating mass per unit area — Gravimetric methods) is specifically referenced for gravimetric procedure details and uncertainty information. Other national/adopted versions (EN ISO, BS EN) exist for regional application and administrative adoption.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 10111:2019 is an ISO International Standard that reviews and provides guidance on gravimetric and chemical analysis methods for measuring the mass per unit area of metallic and other inorganic coatings.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers descriptive guidance on a range of procedures — including dissolution-based gravimetric methods, weighing methods and instrumental chemical analyses — for determining average coating surface density across a measured area, and indicates applicability by coating and deposition method.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Coating and surface-treatment laboratories, manufacturing quality-control teams, test houses, standards committees and researchers who need standardized methods to determine or verify coating mass per unit area.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 10111:2019 is the current (second) edition published in January 2019; it replaced ISO 10111:2000, which was withdrawn. The 2019 edition is published and maintained by ISO and is subject to periodic review.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is part of ISO activity in surface treatment and metallic coatings (work of ISO/TC 107) and is associated with other standards covering measurement and test methods for coatings (for example ISO 3892 for gravimetric determination of coating mass).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Mass per unit area, surface density, gravimetric analysis, chemical analysis, coatings measurement, anodic oxide, electrodeposition, hot-dip galvanizing, PVD, CVD.
