Full title and description
ISO 104:2015 — Rolling bearings — Thrust bearings — Boundary dimensions, general plan. This International Standard specifies preferred boundary (overall) dimensions and associated dimensional guidance for single-direction and double-direction thrust bearings with flat back faces; it is available in electronic (PDF) and print formats from ISO and national standards bodies.
Abstract
ISO 104:2015 specifies preferred boundary dimensions for single-direction and double-direction thrust bearings with flat back faces. It also gives minimum bore diameters of housing washers and maximum outside diameters of shaft washers for bearings in dimension series 11, 12, 13, 14, 22, 23 and 24. Guidelines for extending the standard for single-direction thrust bearings are given in Annex A; boundary dimensions for aligning thrust bearings and aligning seat washers are covered by ISO 20516.

Scope
ISO 104:2015 defines preferred boundary dimensions (overall envelope dimensions) and related dimensional limits for single- and double-direction thrust bearings with flat back faces. It specifies dimensional series and related minimum/maximum diameters for housing and shaft washers in the indicated dimension series, and provides Annex A guidance for extending the standard to other single-direction thrust-bearing sizes. For aligning (spherical/back-faced) thrust bearings and aligning seat washers the related ISO 20516 applies.
Key topics and requirements
- Preferred boundary (overall) dimensions for single-direction and double-direction thrust bearings with flat back faces.
- Minimum bore diameters of housing washers and maximum outside diameters of shaft washers for dimension series 11, 12, 13, 14, 22, 23 and 24.
- Guidance (Annex A) for extending the dimensional plan to additional single-direction thrust bearing sizes.
- Clarification that boundary dimensions for aligning thrust bearings (non-flat back faces) and aligning seat washers are given in ISO 20516.
- Compatibility and interchangeability considerations for designers and manufacturers to ensure correct mounting and replacement across bearing suppliers.
Typical use and users
Engineers, bearing designers, mechanical designers, procurement specialists, bearing manufacturers and standards committees use ISO 104:2015 when specifying, selecting or manufacturing thrust bearings to ensure dimensional interchangeability and correct mounting clearances in machines and assemblies. It is commonly used in industries where axial load-bearing components are critical (automotive, heavy machinery, wind turbines, industrial gearboxes, etc.).
Related standards
Key related standards include ISO 20516:2007 (Rolling bearings — Aligning thrust ball bearings and aligning seat washers — Boundary dimensions), which covers aligning (spherical) thrust bearings and seat washers, and the earlier edition ISO 104:2002, which ISO 104:2015 revises and replaces. Additional rolling-bearing dimensional standards and vocabulary standards (for example ISO 5593 and ISO 582 for chamfer limits) are often used alongside ISO 104.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 104:2015 is an International Standard that defines preferred boundary (overall) dimensions and related dimensional guidance for single- and double-direction thrust bearings with flat back faces, used to ensure interchangeability and correct mounting.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers preferred boundary dimensions, minimum bore diameters for housing washers and maximum outside diameters for shaft washers for specified dimension series (11, 12, 13, 14, 22, 23, 24), and includes guidelines in Annex A for extending the plan to other single-direction thrust-bearing sizes. For aligning thrust bearings and aligning seat washers see ISO 20516.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Bearing manufacturers, mechanical and design engineers, procurement specialists, testing and quality personnel, and standards committees use ISO 104:2015 when specifying or verifying bearing dimensions and ensuring interchangeability.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 104:2015 (Edition 4, published September 2015) is the current published edition that replaced ISO 104:2002; the ISO catalogue entry shows it as published and subject to periodic systematic review. Check the ISO catalogue or national standards bodies for the latest review status before relying on it for compliance-sensitive work.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: ISO 104 is part of the body of ISO rolling-bearing standards maintained by ISO/TC 4; related dimensional and vocabulary standards (for example ISO 20516 for aligning thrust bearings, ISO 5593 for vocabulary, ISO 582 for chamfer dimensions) are commonly used together.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Key keywords are rolling bearings, thrust bearings, axial bearings, boundary dimensions, housing washer, shaft washer, dimension series, interchangeability.
