Full title and description

ISO 10565:1998 — Oilseeds — Simultaneous determination of oil and water contents — Method using pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance (pulsed NMR) spectrometry. This international standard specifies a rapid laboratory method for measuring both oil and water content in commercial oilseeds (rapeseed, soya bean, linseed, sunflower) using pulsed NMR instrumentation.

Abstract

This standard defines a pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometric procedure to determine simultaneously the oil and water contents of whole commercial oilseeds whose water content is below about 10%. For seeds with higher water content, drying is required before determining oil by pulsed NMR. The method has been tested on rapeseed, soya beans, linseed and sunflower seed; reproducibility is generally higher than that of the conventional drying (gravimetric) oil-determination method (ISO 665). This edition (2) was published in 1998 and remained confirmed on later review; a revision in the form of ISO/DIS 10565 has been prepared to replace it.

General information

  • Status: Published (International Standard; edition 2, 1998).
  • Publication date: 1998-08 (1998, second edition).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 67.200.20 — Food technology; oilseeds.
  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (1998).
  • Number of pages: 12 (published technical text, typical pagination 11–13 pages in distributor listings).

Scope

Specifies a rapid, non-destructive pulsed NMR method for the simultaneous determination of oil and water contents in whole commercial oilseeds (rapeseed, soya bean, linseed, sunflower) when water content is less than about 10%. For seeds with higher water content the standard requires drying before oil determination by NMR. While validated on the listed seeds, the method may apply to other oilseeds provided that the oil is liquid at the measurement temperature.

Key topics and requirements

  • Principle: pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance (pulsed NMR) spectrometry for simultaneous oil and water measurement.
  • Applicability: rapeseed, soya bean, linseed, sunflower seed (water content < ~10%).
  • Pre-treatment: drying required for seeds with water content above the specified limit before oil determination.
  • Performance notes: reproducibility values are generally higher (i.e., worse) than those from the drying (gravimetric) oil method (ISO 665) and interlaboratory precision data are addressed in the standard.
  • Operational considerations: calibration of NMR instrument, temperature control (oil must be liquid at measurement temperature), sample tube/material compatibility and sample mass requirements.

Typical use and users

Used by seed analysis laboratories, oilseed processors, quality-control departments, research institutions and manufacturers of NMR analysers for rapid screening and routine quality checks of oil and moisture content. It is typically applied where rapid, non-destructive throughput is required or where simultaneous oil/water data are advantageous compared with separate gravimetric moisture and oil tests.

Related standards

Closely related to gravimetric and moisture standards for oilseeds — notably ISO 665 (moisture/volatile matter determination by oven drying) and earlier NMR-related oil-determination standards (for example ISO 5511 and other oilseed-analysis methods). ISO/DIS 10565 is the draft intended to replace ISO 10565:1998.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 10565:1998 is an international standard that specifies a pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometric method for the simultaneous determination of oil and water contents in commercial oilseeds.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers the measurement principle, apparatus requirements, sample preparation limits (notably a water-content guideline of about 10%), procedure notes, and performance considerations for rapeseed, soya bean, linseed and sunflower seed; seeds with higher water content must be dried before oil measurement by NMR.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Seed-testing laboratories, oilseed processors, quality assurance/quality control teams, instrument manufacturers and research labs performing routine or comparative oil/moisture analysis.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 10565:1998 (edition 2) is a published International Standard (1998) that was reviewed and confirmed in later reviews; a revision has been prepared as ISO/DIS 10565 which is intended to replace the 1998 edition—check the ISO catalogue or your national standards body for the current lifecycle status before purchase or citation.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is part of the suite of ISO methods for oilseed analysis (moisture and oil determination methods) and references related ISO standards such as ISO 665 for moisture/drying methods; other historical NMR oil-determination documents (e.g., ISO 5511) are also related.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Oilseeds, pulsed NMR, oil content, moisture/water content, rapeseed, soya bean, linseed, sunflower, ISO 10565.
