Full title and description

ISO 1061:1990 — Plastics — Unplasticized cellulose acetate — Determination of free acidity. This International Standard specifies a titrimetric method for determining the free acidity (expressed as percentage by mass of free acetic acid) in unplasticized cellulose acetate by extraction with water and titration of the extract with sodium hydroxide solution.

Abstract

The standard describes a procedure that covers acidity extractable by water and acidity due to acidic groups attached directly to the cellulose acetate (for example carboxyl groups). It is not suitable for cellulose acetate formulations that contain additives likely to affect the test. The method consists of treating a test portion with water and titrating the resultant solution; the result is reported as the percentage (by mass) of free acetic acid. This edition (Edition 2, 1990) cancels and replaces ISO 1061:1975.

General information

  • Status: Published (Edition 2, 1990); the 1990 edition was reviewed and confirmed in a later ISO review.
  • Publication date: 8 November 1990 (Edition 2).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 83.080.20 (Plastics — Thermoplastic materials).
  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (1990).
  • Number of pages: 2 (concise test method format).

Scope

This standard specifies a titrimetric laboratory method to determine free acidity in unplasticized cellulose acetate materials. It applies to samples of unplasticized cellulose acetate where free acetic acid (water-extractable acidity and acidic functional groups on the polymer) is the analyte of interest. The method excludes formulations containing additives that interfere with the extraction or titration steps.

Key topics and requirements

  • Test specimen preparation: taking a representative test portion of unplasticized cellulose acetate.
  • Extraction procedure: treatment of the sample with water to extract free acidity.
  • Titration: neutralization of the extract with standard sodium hydroxide solution to determine acidity.
  • Calculation and expression of results: reporting free acidity as percentage by mass of free acetic acid.
  • Limitations: not applicable to cellulose acetate containing additives that affect the test outcome.

Typical use and users

Laboratories performing quality control and incoming inspection of unplasticized cellulose acetate raw materials and semi-finished products; manufacturers of cellulose acetate films, sheets and articles; materials scientists and R&D groups assessing polymer purity or degradation (acetic acid content); standards bodies and conformity assessment organizations referencing a concise method for free acidity determination.

Related standards

ISO 1061:1990 is a revision of ISO 1061:1975 (the 1975 version was withdrawn and replaced by the 1990 edition). Some national/adopted versions exist (for example UNE‑EN adoption entries referencing ISO 1061:1990). The standard sits among other ISO and national test methods for plastics and cellulose derivatives developed under ISO/TC 61/SC 9.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 1061:1990 is an International Standard that specifies a titrimetric method for determining free acidity (free acetic acid) in unplasticized cellulose acetate materials.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers sample extraction with water and titration of the extract with sodium hydroxide to calculate and report the percentage by mass of free acetic acid. It excludes formulations containing additives that interfere with the test.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Chemical and materials testing laboratories, cellulose acetate manufacturers, R&D teams working on plastics and polymer quality control, and standards/conformity bodies referencing a standardized acidity test for unplasticized cellulose acetate.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The 1990 edition (Edition 2) replaced ISO 1061:1975. According to the ISO record, the 1990 version has been reviewed (confirmed in later reviews) and remains the published edition. Users should check ISO or their national standards body for any subsequent amendments or newer revisions before final application.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: ISO 1061 is a single-method standard focused on free acidity in unplasticized cellulose acetate; it is related by subject matter to other ISO test methods for plastics produced under ISO/TC 61 and its subcommittees but is not presented as a multi-part series.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Cellulose acetate, free acidity, acetic acid, titration, plastics testing, unplasticized, ISO 1061.
