Full title and description

Large yachts — Strength, weathertightness and watertightness of glazed openings — Part 1: Design criteria, materials, framing and testing of independent glazed openings. This International Standard specifies technical requirements for independent glazed openings on large yachts, covering design pressures, materials and framing details, and test methods for strength, weathertightness and watertightness.

Abstract

This document establishes design criteria and technical requirements for glazed openings that are independently supported (pane supported by simple linear edge support) on large yachts (hull length L_H ≥ 24 m). It addresses navigation conditions, location of openings, materials, framing and relevant testing; excludes horizontally positioned glazing and treats additional safety rules for yachts carrying more than 12 passengers as outside its scope. The standard is intended to support integrity related to weathertightness and watertightness and is based on experience from manufacturers, shipbuilders and relevant maritime regulations (including references to SOLAS and the International Convention on Load Lines).

General information

  • Status: Published (International Standard).
  • Publication date: November 2023 (Edition 2 — published in 2023; publication recorded 6 November 2023 in several national sales listings).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 47.040 (Seagoing vessels / large yachts).
  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (2023).
  • Number of pages: 59 pages (ISO edition).

Scope

Applies to the design of independent glazed openings on large yachts (length of hull ≥ 24 m) that are above the deepest waterline and are critical for weathertightness and watertightness. The standard covers design criteria, materials, framing arrangements and test procedures for strength and sealing performance of simply supported glazed panes. It does not cover glazing whose edge rotations are more constrained than by a single bond line, horizontally positioned glazing, or additional fire integrity and damage stability requirements for vessels carrying more than 12 passengers (those fall under relevant marine administrations or other codes).

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition of "large yachts" (hull length L_H ≥ 24 m) and the applicability limits for passenger-carrying yachts.
  • Design pressure models and parameterisation to account for navigation conditions and opening location.
  • Material requirements for glazing and supporting framing, including laminate and monolithic glass considerations.
  • Framing and edge-support criteria for independently supported glazed openings (simple linear edge support only).
  • Testing procedures for structural strength and for weathertightness/watertightness (test methods and performance criteria).
  • Notes and normative/informative annexes that document calculation methods, testing details and changes introduced in the 2023 revision.

Typical use and users

Used by yacht designers and naval architects, shipbuilders, glazing and marine-window manufacturers, testing laboratories, classification societies and marine regulatory authorities to specify and verify the structural and sealing performance of windows, portholes and other independently supported glazed openings on large yachts. Manufacturers and procurement/specification teams use the standard to ensure compliance with internationally accepted design and test methods.

Related standards

ISO 11336 is a multi-part series. Part 2 (ISO 11336-2:2020) covers glazed openings that are integrated into the adjacent structure (elastically bonded to bulkhead or shell) and addresses bonded installations, structural support, installation and testing. The 2012 edition of ISO 11336-1 was withdrawn and superseded by the 2023 edition. The standard references SOLAS and the International Convention on Load Lines where relevant.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 11336-1:2023 is an International Standard that sets design, material, framing and testing requirements for independently supported glazed openings on large yachts (hull length ≥ 24 m).

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers design pressure models, material guidance, framing and edge-support requirements, and test methods for strength, weathertightness and watertightness of independent glazed openings located above the deepest waterline; it excludes horizontally positioned glazing and certain passenger-safety requirements beyond 12 passengers.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Yacht designers, naval architects, shipbuilders, glazing manufacturers, testing laboratories, classification societies and regulatory authorities — essentially anyone specifying or verifying the performance of marine glazing on large yachts.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: Current — the 2023 edition (Edition 2) supersedes the earlier 2012 edition (which was withdrawn).

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — ISO 11336 is multi-part. Part 1 deals with independent glazed openings; Part 2 (ISO 11336-2:2020) covers glazed openings bonded into adjacent structure. Designers should consider both parts where appropriate.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Large yachts, glazed openings, glazing, weathertightness, watertightness, framing, design criteria, testing, edge support, marine glazing.
