Full title and description

ISO 11623:2023 — Gas cylinders — Composite cylinders and tubes — Periodic inspection and testing. This International Standard specifies requirements for the recurring inspection and testing needed to verify the integrity and continued serviceability of hoop‑wrapped and fully‑wrapped composite transportable gas cylinders and tubes (Types 2, 3, 4 and 5) with aluminium‑alloy, steel or non‑metallic liners or linerless construction, intended for compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases under pressure.

Abstract

This document establishes the periodic inspection and testing procedures, acceptance/rejection criteria and related verification activities for composite cylinders and tubes with water capacities from 0.5 L up to 3 000 L. It addresses cylinders and tubes manufactured to ISO 11119‑1, ISO 11119‑2, ISO 11119‑3, ISO 11119‑4 and ISO 11515 and may be applied to other comparable designs when authorized by the competent authority; it can also, where appropriate and authorized, be applied to cylinders of less than 0.5 L.

General information

  • Status: Published.
  • Publication date: 13 July 2023 (Edition 3, 2023).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 23.020.35 (Gas cylinders).
  • Edition / version: Edition 3 (2023).
  • Number of pages: 39 (official ISO publication).

Scope

ISO 11623:2023 applies to hoop‑wrapped and fully‑wrapped composite transportable gas cylinders and tubes (Types 2, 3, 4 and 5) intended for compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases and having water capacities from 0.5 L up to 3 000 L. The standard covers the periodic inspection and testing methods, intervals, acceptance and rejection criteria, and record‑keeping needed to determine whether cylinders and tubes are fit for continued service. It is written primarily for cylinders constructed to the ISO 11119 series and ISO 11515 but may be applied to other comparable composite designs with appropriate authority.

Key topics and requirements

  • Periodic inspection and testing procedures for hoop‑wrapped and fully‑wrapped composite cylinders and tubes.
  • Applicability to Types 2, 3, 4 and 5 composite constructions and to liner and linerless designs.
  • Water‑capacity range: 0.5 L up to 3 000 L (with manufacturer/authority provisions for smaller volumes).
  • Referenced normative standards for design and construction (ISO 11119 series, ISO 11515) and application guidance for comparable designs.
  • Typical inspection methods: visual/external examination, internal examination where applicable, pressure/leak testing and nondestructive techniques (as referenced or specified).
  • Acceptance and rejection criteria, marking and documentation/record requirements for continued service decisions.
  • Requirements for competent authorities, inspection bodies and manufacturer authorizations when extending application beyond the specified design bases.

Typical use and users

ISO 11623:2023 is intended for use by cylinder manufacturers, inspection and testing laboratories, gas suppliers, cylinder service and refurbishment centres, transport and rental companies, competent authorities and regulatory bodies, and any organisation responsible for the periodic inspection, maintenance and certification of composite gas cylinders and tubes.

Related standards

Key related documents include the ISO 11119 series (design and construction requirements for composite transportable gas cylinders), ISO 11515, and other ISO publications covering periodic inspection and testing of cylinders and cylinder fittings (examples: ISO 18119, ISO 20475, ISO 23876). Users should consult the ISO/TC 58 suite of standards for complementary guidance.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 11623:2023 is an International Standard that specifies the requirements for periodic inspection and testing of hoop‑wrapped and fully‑wrapped composite transportable gas cylinders and tubes to verify integrity for continued service.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers inspection/test methods, intervals, acceptance/rejection criteria, and documentation for composite cylinders and tubes (Types 2–5) with specified liner types or linerless construction, and applies to cylinders manufactured to the ISO 11119 series and ISO 11515 (or comparable designs when authorised).

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Manufacturers, inspection bodies, gas suppliers, service/ refurbishment centres, test laboratories, regulators and other organisations responsible for cylinder safety and maintenance.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: Current — ISO 11623:2023 (Edition 3, published July 2023) is the active edition; it supersedes the withdrawn ISO 11623:2015 edition.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is part of the body of ISO standards covering gas cylinders (work of ISO/TC 58), and is explicitly linked to the ISO 11119 series (composite cylinder design) and ISO 11515; complementary standards on cylinder inspection, valves and acoustic emission testing are part of the same technical committee work programme.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Composite cylinders, composite tubes, periodic inspection, periodic testing, gas cylinders, Types 2–5, ISO 11119, acceptance criteria, nondestructive testing.
