Full title and description
ISO 13715:2017 — Technical product documentation — Edges of undefined shape — Indication and dimensioning. This international standard specifies the graphic symbol, rules and proportions for indicating and dimensioning edges on technical product documentation when the edge geometry is not defined by exact geometric form (for example to control passing, undercut, burrs or other undefined edge conditions).
Abstract
ISO 13715:2017 provides standardized rules for how undefined edges are shown on drawings and other technical product documentation. It defines the basic graphical indication, permitted symbol proportions (normative Annex A), how to indicate type (+, –, ±), size, direction of relief or chamfer, and conventions for individual, limited-area and general edge indications. Where a geometrically defined edge is required (for example 1 × 45°), ISO 129‑1 principles apply.

Scope
This standard applies to the indication and dimensioning of edges of undefined shape on technical product documentation. It covers the basic graphical symbol and its proportions, how to indicate the type of undefined edge (permitted excess, required material, or both), how to specify the size and direction of relief or connection, and rules for placing indications as individual, limited-area or general indications on drawings. The standard does not replace rules for geometrically defined edges, which remain subject to ISO 129‑1 and related GPS standards.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition and classification of undefined-edge types (e.g., passing/excess material, required material, ± combinations).
- Basic graphical indication: symbol shape, orientation and the requirement that symbols be readable from the bottom of the drawing.
- Normative proportions and dimensions for the graphical symbol (given in Annex A).
- Rules for indicating size limits and permissible material conditions for edges (how to show magnitude and tolerance where applicable).
- Conventions for direction of relief or chamfering and for asymmetrical indications.
- Placement rules for individual edge indications, limited-area indications, and general indications covering all edges.
- Examples and informative illustrations showing common cases (Annex B / examples section).
Typical use and users
Used by mechanical designers, drafters, CAD modelers, technical illustrators, manufacturing engineers, quality and inspection personnel, and documentation specialists who prepare or interpret engineering drawings and other technical product documentation. Typical uses include specifying acceptable edge conditions on parts that cannot be defined by exact geometry (castings, molded parts, stampings, and post-machined parts) and ensuring consistent interpretation across design, manufacturing and inspection.
Related standards
Closely related to the ISO Technical Product Documentation (TPD) family and Geometrical Product Specification (GPS) standards, for example ISO 129‑1 (dimensioning principles), ISO 128 (presentation of drawings), ISO 1101 (geometrical tolerancing), ISO 1302 (surface texture), ISO 7083 (symbol proportions for geometric tolerancing), ISO 8015 (fundamentals of GPS) and earlier ISO 13715:2000 (superseded).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 13715:2017 is an international standard that specifies how to indicate and dimension edges of undefined shape on technical product documentation and engineering drawings.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the graphical symbol for undefined edges, its proportions and orientation, how to indicate the type of edge condition (+, −, ±), size and directional information, and placement rules for individual, limited-area and general indications. It does not replace dimensioning rules for geometrically defined edges (see ISO 129‑1).
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Mechanical designers, CAD drafters, manufacturing engineers, quality/inspection staff, technical documentation specialists and standards authors who need to specify or interpret non‑geometric edge conditions on parts and assemblies.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 13715:2017 is the current edition (3rd edition) published on 17 March 2017. It replaced ISO 13715:2000 and was reviewed and confirmed during routine review (confirmed in 2024), so the 2017 edition remains current.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is part of the ISO Technical Product Documentation (TPD) family and aligns with other ISO drawing and GPS standards (for example ISO 128, ISO 129, ISO 1101 and ISO 8015). It is not a multi‑part numbered series by itself but is intended to be used together with other TPD and GPS standards.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Edges, undefined shape, edge indication, dimensioning, technical product documentation, engineering drawings, chamfer, burr, passing, graphical symbol.
