Full title and description
ISO 14159:2002 — Safety of machinery — Hygiene requirements for the design of machinery. This International Standard specifies hygiene requirements for machines and gives information on the intended use that manufacturers should supply; it applies where machines and associated equipment can create hygiene risks for the consumer of the product.
Abstract
This standard sets out hygienic design principles for machinery used in applications where product contamination or other hygiene risks to consumers may occur. It covers requirements affecting materials, surfaces, access for cleaning, maintenance and inspection, and the information manufacturers must provide. It explicitly does not cover requirements related to the uncontrolled egress of microbiological agents from the machine.
General information
- Status: Published (International Standard); under systematic review / to be revised.
- Publication date: 25 April 2002 (Edition 1, 2002).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 13.110 — Machine safety (machinery).
- Edition / version: Edition 1 (2002).
- Number of pages: 30.
Scope
ISO 14159:2002 applies to all types of machines and associated equipment used in applications where hygiene risks to the consumer of the product can occur. It defines hygiene-related design requirements and the information manufacturers should supply for intended use, cleaning and maintenance. The standard does not address uncontrolled release of microbiological agents from machinery.
Key topics and requirements
- Hygienic design principles for machinery to reduce contamination risk.
- Selection of materials and surface finishes suitable for cleaning and resistant to product interaction.
- Design for access: safe and practical access for cleaning, inspection, adjustment and maintenance.
- Prevention of product accumulation, ingress of contaminants and cross‑contamination.
- Requirements for seals, connections and interfaces to avoid contamination pathways.
- Information the manufacturer must provide (intended use, cleaning procedures, maintenance instructions and limitations).
- Clear statement of exclusions — e.g., the standard does not cover uncontrolled egress of microbiological agents.
Typical use and users
Machine designers and manufacturers (especially in food, beverage, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and related consumer-product industries), OEMs, safety engineers, conformity assessors, regulatory bodies and maintenance/cleaning personnel use ISO 14159 to design, assess and document hygienic aspects of machinery and to prepare user and cleaning information.
Related standards
Closely related standards include other ISO machine-safety and risk-reduction standards (for example ISO 12100 on general principles for design — risk assessment and risk reduction) and regional/adopted versions such as EN ISO 14159. A committee draft (ISO/CD 14159) is in development as a replacement/update to ISO 14159:2002.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 14159:2002 is an International Standard titled "Safety of machinery — Hygiene requirements for the design of machinery" that provides hygiene-related design requirements and manufacturer information for machines used where consumer hygiene risks exist.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers hygienic design principles: materials and finishes, cleanability, access for cleaning and maintenance, prevention of contamination, and the information manufacturers must provide. It does not cover uncontrolled egress of microbiological agents.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Machine manufacturers and designers (especially in food, beverage, pharmaceutical and cosmetics sectors), safety engineers, conformity assessors, and those responsible for cleaning and maintenance procedures.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 14159:2002 remains a published International Standard (first published 25 April 2002) and was confirmed in previous systematic reviews; however, it has been placed under revision and a committee draft (ISO/CD 14159) is in development to update/replace the 2002 edition. Users should check the current revision status before assuming unchanged applicability.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: ISO 14159 is a standalone standard focused on hygienic design within the broader set of ISO standards on machine safety (work of ISO/TC 199). It is commonly used alongside general machine-safety standards such as ISO 12100 and other sectoral standards.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Hygienic design, cleanability, contamination prevention, materials, surface finish, machine safety, manufacturer information, maintenance access, ISO 14159.
