Full title and description
ISO 2307:2019 — Fibre ropes — Determination of certain physical and mechanical properties. This international standard defines standardized laboratory test methods for measuring the physical and mechanical characteristics of fibre ropes, including linear density, diameter, lay length, braid pitch, elongation and breaking force; it also gives optional procedures for determining water repellence, lubricant and finish content on customer request.
Abstract
ISO 2307:2019 specifies test methods and measurement procedures for a range of rope characteristics used for quality control, specification and conformity assessment. Procedures cover sampling, apparatus, specimen preparation and test sequences for dimensional and tensile measurements, plus reporting requirements and optional tests (water repellence, lubrication/finish content). The document replaces ISO 2307:2010 and is the fifth edition of the standard.
General information

Key bibliographic and lifecycle data are taken from the ISO bibliographical record and the EN/BSI endorsements of the ISO text.
Scope
Applies to fibre ropes of various constructions and materials and specifies methods for determining: linear density (mass per unit length), rope diameter, lay length and braid pitch, elongation (measured from a specified nominal tension to a defined load level) and breaking force (measured on a constant‑speed tensile testing machine). The standard also provides, on request, procedures for measuring water repellence and the content of lubricants and finishing agents. Test tensions, specimen lengths and detailed test procedures (including Annex A and Annex B alternative procedures) are included in the text.
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and terms specific to fibre rope measurement (rope constructions, lay, pitch, nominal tension).
- Sampling rules: batch composition, sample size and selection to ensure representative test results.
- Apparatus and conditioning: required test machines, grips, measuring instruments and environmental conditioning.
- Measurement procedures: methods to determine linear density, diameter, lay length, braid pitch and elongation under specified tensions.
- Tensile test method: specimen preparation, test speed (constant crosshead speed), measurement of breaking force and force–elongation recording.
- Optional tests: procedures for water repellence and measurement of lubricant/finish content when requested by the customer.
- Reporting: required data, calculation methods and presentation of results for specification and conformity purposes.
These requirements are intended to produce repeatable, comparable test data for manufacturers, testing laboratories and specifiers.
Typical use and users
Used by rope and cordage manufacturers for product development and quality control; independent testing and certification laboratories for type approval and conformity testing; procurement and specification engineers who require standardized physical and mechanical data for selection and purchasing; and regulatory or industry bodies that reference standardized test methods for maritime, offshore, lifting, industrial, rescue, sports (climbing, sailing) and general-purpose rope applications.
Related standards
ISO 2307 is commonly used alongside other fibre-rope standards and specifications such as ISO 9554 (fibre ropes — general specifications), ISO 1140/1141 (polyamide and polyester rope specifications), ISO 10325 (high‑modulus polyethylene ropes), ISO 1968/1969 (vocabulary and particular rope types) and product‑specific ISO/EN standards. These documents together cover rope designation, material‑specific requirements, safety factors and vocabulary.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 2307:2019 is an international standard that specifies laboratory test methods for determining key physical and mechanical properties of fibre ropes (linear density, diameter, lay length, braid pitch, elongation and breaking force), plus optional tests for water repellence and lubricant/finish content.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers sampling, apparatus, specimen preparation, measurement procedures and reporting for the dimensional and tensile testing of fibre ropes, with measured values obtained under specified tensions and test speeds; alternative procedures for special cases are provided in annexes.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Rope manufacturers, textile and rope testing laboratories, procurement/specification engineers, certification bodies and industries that depend on rope performance (maritime, offshore, lifting, rescue, climbing, sports, industrial applications).
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: Current — ISO 2307:2019 is the fifth edition and supersedes ISO 2307:2010. The 2019 edition is published and confirmed as the active international standard.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes. ISO 2307 is part of the family of rope-related textile standards maintained by ISO/TC 38; it is used together with standards that specify rope materials, constructions and general requirements (for example ISO 9554, ISO 1140/1141, ISO 10325 and related vocabulary standards).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: fibre ropes; rope testing; linear density; diameter; lay length; braid pitch; elongation; breaking force; water repellence; lubricant/finish content; ISO 2307.
