Full title and description

ISO 23529:2016 — Rubber — General procedures for preparing and conditioning test pieces for physical test methods. This International Standard specifies general procedures for the preparation, measurement, marking, storage and conditioning of rubber test pieces for use in physical test methods given in other standards; it also gives preferred conditions to be used during such tests and requirements for time intervals between forming and testing of test pieces and products to obtain reproducible results.

Abstract

ISO 23529:2016 sets out uniform, general procedures and preferred conditions for preparing and conditioning rubber test specimens used in physical test methods specified elsewhere. The standard covers specimen preparation (forming and trimming), dimensional measurement and marking, storage and handling, conditioning to defined temperature and humidity, and the time intervals to be observed between forming and testing to reduce variability and disputes between supplier and purchaser. It explicitly excludes special test conditions that are specific to particular tests, materials or whole-product testing.

General information

  • Status: Published (confirmed in systematic review).
  • Publication date: 2016-11 (Edition 3).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 83.060 — Rubber.
  • Edition / version: Edition 3 (2016).
  • Number of pages: 16 (official ISO document length).

Key bibliographic and lifecycle details are listed on the ISO entry for this standard (publication 2016; edition 3) and the document was reviewed and confirmed in 2021.

Scope

Applies to general procedures for preparing, measuring, marking, storing and conditioning rubber test pieces intended for use in physical test methods specified in other international standards. It gives preferred environmental and handling conditions to improve reproducibility of test results and defines recommended minimum time intervals between forming (e.g. moulding or cutting) and testing. The standard does not include special conditioning or preparation procedures required by particular tests, specific materials, simulated climatic environments or whole-product testing.

Key topics and requirements

  • Specimen preparation: forming, trimming, and dimensional tolerances for test pieces.
  • Dimensional measurement and marking: required identification and measurement practices for reproducibility.
  • Storage and handling: recommended storage conditions and handling to avoid property changes prior to testing.
  • Conditioning: preferred conditioning temperature and relative humidity ranges and times for specimens before testing.
  • Time intervals: requirements for minimum/typical time intervals between forming (e.g. vulcanization, moulding) and testing to reduce test variability.
  • General recommendations for traceability and documentation of specimen history (formation, storage, conditioning).

Typical use and users

Used by materials and quality laboratories, rubber product manufacturers, test houses, R&D teams and suppliers and purchasers involved in material specification, physical property testing and quality control of elastomers. It is applied where multiple test methods (tensile, hardness, compression, etc.) rely on consistent specimen preparation and conditioning to ensure comparable results between laboratories and between supplier and customer.

Related standards

ISO 23529:2016 is a general preparatory/conditioning standard referenced by many rubber physical test standards (for example, standards for tensile testing, hardness measurement and compression set). It supersedes ISO 23529:2010 (withdrawn). An amendment project (ISO 23529:2016/AWI Amd 1) has been registered and was under development at ISO at the time of the last lifecycle notes.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 23529:2016 is an International Standard that specifies general procedures for preparing and conditioning rubber test pieces used in physical test methods to improve reproducibility of results.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers specimen formation and trimming, dimensional measurement and marking, storage and handling, conditioning to defined temperature and humidity, and recommended time intervals between forming and testing. It does not include special conditions tied to particular tests or whole-product testing.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Test laboratories, rubber manufacturers, quality assurance teams, R&D groups, suppliers and purchasers who need consistent specimen preparation and conditioning ahead of physical testing.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 23529:2016 is the current edition (Edition 3, published 2016) and was reviewed/confirmed in 2021. The 2016 edition replaced ISO 23529:2010. An amendment project (Amd 1) was noted as under development.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is a general, cross-referenced standard that supports many specific ISO test-method standards for rubber (tensile, hardness, compression, ageing, etc.), rather than being a numbered series; individual test-method standards specify particular additional requirements.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Rubber, elastomer, specimen preparation, conditioning, storage, marking, dimensional measurement, physical testing, ISO 23529.
