Full title and description
ISO 23794-2023 — Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic — Abrasion testing — Guidance. This International Standard provides guidance to help laboratories, manufacturers and specifiers select appropriate abrasion test methods and test conditions for evaluating the abrasion resistance of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers.
Abstract
The standard gives guidance on the determination of abrasion resistance for vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers, covering tests that use both solid and loose abrasives. It is intended to assist selection of an appropriate test method and conditions and to identify factors that influence correlation between laboratory abrasion tests and real product performance. It is not intended to replace wear tests developed for specific finished products (for example trailer tests for tyres).

Scope
ISO 23794:2023 provides guidance for choosing and interpreting abrasion tests for vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers. It covers test media (solid and loose abrasives), selection of appropriate procedures and test conditions, and factors affecting how laboratory abrasion results relate to in-service wear. It explicitly excludes prescriptive wear tests developed for particular finished products.
Key topics and requirements
- Guidance on selecting suitable abrasion test methods and test conditions for different rubber materials and applications.
- Coverage of both solid and loose abrasive media and considerations for each.
- Discussion of factors that influence correlation between laboratory abrasion results and actual product performance (material formulation, test geometry, load, abrasive grade, temperature, etc.).
- Recommendations for use of comparative laboratory methods (and their limitations when predicting in-service wear).
- Positioning as a guidance document — it helps choose test standards (for example ISO 4649 or equivalent rotary‑drum methods) rather than defining a single prescriptive test procedure.
Typical use and users
Users include materials and product R&D teams, quality control and testing laboratories, rubber and elastomer manufacturers, component and tyre makers, footwear and conveyor‑belt producers, and standards committees. The document is used to select appropriate abrasion tests, interpret comparative results, and understand limitations of laboratory abrasion testing for predicting field performance. Practical test-method examples commonly referenced alongside this guidance include rotary-drum/rotating‑cylinder methods (ISO 4649) and equivalent national/industry methods (e.g., ASTM D5963).
Related standards
Relevant test-method standards and regional equivalents frequently used with this guidance include ISO 4649 (determination of abrasion resistance using a rotating cylindrical drum device), ASTM D5963 (rotary drum abrader test method), DIN 53516 and various national adoptions and adaptations. ISO 23794 is intended to help users choose among or interpret these prescriptive test methods.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 23794:2023 is an ISO guidance document that helps users select and interpret abrasion tests for vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers; it is not itself a prescriptive test method.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers considerations for determining abrasion resistance using laboratory methods (solid and loose abrasives), selection of appropriate test procedures and conditions, and factors affecting how test results relate to real-world wear. It excludes specific finished‑product wear tests.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Test laboratories, materials R&D, product designers and manufacturers in rubber‑related industries (tyres, hoses, belts, footwear, seals), and standards developers use it to choose and interpret abrasion tests.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 23794:2023 was published on 31 January 2023 and is the current published edition replacing the earlier (2015) edition. Users should check national adoption records or the ISO catalogue for any later revisions.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is part of the body of ISO/TC 45 rubber standards and sits alongside prescriptive test-method standards (for example ISO 4649) that define how to perform specific abrasion tests. ISO 23794 provides guidance on selecting among and interpreting those methods.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Abrasion, wear resistance, vulcanized rubber, thermoplastic elastomer, abrasive testing, rotating drum, test selection, laboratory correlation.
