Full title and description
ISO 2426-1:2020 — Plywood — Classification by surface appearance — Part 1: General. This part establishes the general rules and principles used to classify plywood by its surface appearance for plywood manufactured from hardwood, softwood and other lignocellulosic materials; it excludes overlaid plywood and provides the framework used by the species- or product-specific parts of the series.
Abstract
This international standard defines the general approach to grading and classifying the visible faces of plywood panels according to surface appearance. It sets out terminology, classification principles and the relationship to the part-specific documents that give detailed grading requirements for particular types of plywood. The document is concise (4 pages) and intended to be used alongside Parts 2–4 which address hardwood, softwood and palm-plywood.

Scope
This part gives the general rules for classification by surface appearance applicable to plywood made from a range of wood types (hardwood, softwood and other lignocellulosic materials). It establishes principles, definitions and the classification framework; detailed grading criteria (defect definitions, grade limits and examples) are provided in the corresponding species- or product-specific parts of the ISO 2426 series. The standard does not apply to plywood with surface overlays.
Key topics and requirements
- Terminology and definitions related to plywood face appearance and surface defects.
- General principles for establishing appearance grades and classification rules.
- Framework for assessment of visible defects and allowable limits for face grades (to be specified in part-specific documents).
- Relationship and reference structure between the general part and parts addressing hardwood, softwood and palm-plywood.
- Guidance for use of the classification system in procurement, specification and quality control contexts.
Typical use and users
Used by plywood manufacturers, veneer and panel producers, quality-control laboratories, product specifiers, architects, furniture and joinery manufacturers, procurement teams and national standards bodies. The standard provides a consistent basis for specifying face quality in commercial contracts, production acceptance and inspection.
Related standards
ISO 2426 is a multipart series; relevant related parts and documents include ISO 2426-2:2020 (hardwood), ISO 2426-3:2020 (softwood) and ISO 2426-4:2020 (palm-plywood). The 2020 edition replaces earlier versions of ISO 2426 and its part 1 published in 2000.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 2426-1:2020 is the general part of the ISO plywood surface-appearance classification series; it lays out the overarching rules and terminology for classifying plywood faces by appearance.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the general principles, definitions and framework used to classify plywood surface appearance and links to part-specific standards that specify grading limits and defect definitions for particular plywood types. It explicitly excludes overlaid plywood.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Manufacturers, inspectors, quality-control personnel, specifiers, designers, procurement teams and standards organizations use it to ensure consistent communication and acceptance criteria for plywood face quality.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 2426-1:2020 is the current published edition (published April 2020). It supersedes the earlier ISO 2426-1:2000 edition.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — ISO 2426 is a multipart standard; Part 1 is the general rules and is complemented by Parts 2–4 (2020) covering hardwood, softwood and palm-plywood respectively.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Plywood, surface appearance, grading, face quality, veneer, defects, classification, ISO 2426.
