Full title and description
Vitreous and porcelain enamels — Design of bolted steel tanks for the storage or treatment of water or municipal or industrial effluents and sludges (ISO 28765:2022). This International Standard specifies requirements for the design, installation and maintenance of vitreous-enamel coated, bolted, cylindrical carbon-steel tanks used for storage or treatment of liquids, municipal or industrial effluents and sludges, and associated roofs and foundations.
Abstract
This standard sets out design requirements and limitations for vitreous/porcelain enamel coated bolted cylindrical steel tanks, including geometry limits (product of diameter and wall height, maximum diameter and wall height), material and minimum shell thickness, allowable internal pressure and vacuum limits, temperature range, and guidance on foundations, installation, inspection and maintenance. It excludes chemical-reaction vessels and does not cover fire resistance.
General information
- Status: Published.
- Publication date: October 2022 (ed. 3, published 25 October 2022 / listed as 2022-10).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 25.220.50 (Enamels).
- Edition / version: Edition 3 (ISO 28765:2022).
- Number of pages: 27 (ISO published edition).
Scope
The standard is applicable to vitreous-enamel coated, bolted cylindrical steel tanks that are mounted on a load-bearing base substantially at or above ground level. Applicable cases include tanks where the product of tank diameter (m) and wall height (m) is in the range 5 to 500, with maximum tank diameter 100 m and total wall height 50 m. It applies to carbon-steel sheet construction with a minimum shell thickness of 1.5 mm, for stored liquids that exert negligible frictional force on the wall (including liquids undergoing municipal or industrial treatment). The standard limits internal headspace pressure to ≤ 50 kPa and internal partial vacuum to ≤ 10 kPa and assumes vertical walls and a substantially flat floor intersection with the wall (allowing a slope up to 1:100 for complete emptying). Operational wall temperature range is −50 °C to +100 °C. Installation, inspection and maintenance guidance is included. Chemical-reaction vessels and fire-resistance requirements are outside its scope.
Key topics and requirements
- Design requirements for bolted, vitreous-enamel coated cylindrical steel tanks (geometry, shell thickness, materials).
- Limits on tank size and proportions: diameter × wall height between 5 and 500; diameter ≤ 100 m; wall height ≤ 50 m.
- Permitted internal pressure and vacuum conditions (≤ 50 kPa pressure; ≤ 10 kPa partial vacuum).
- Material specification: carbon steel sheet for manufacture; minimum shell thickness 1.5 mm.
- Guidance on foundations, associated roofs, installation procedures, and inspection and maintenance of installed tanks.
- Explicit exclusions: chemical-reaction vessels and fire resistance matters are not covered.
Typical use and users
Typical users include design engineers, tank manufacturers and fabricators (specializing in vitreous-enamel coated bolted tanks), water and wastewater utilities, municipal and industrial effluent treatment plant designers, inspection and maintenance contractors, and regulators specifying construction or procurement requirements for coated steel storage/treatment tanks. The standard is used to ensure safe, durable design and consistent practice in enamel-coated bolted tank construction and upkeep.
Related standards
National and regional adoptions or identical publications include EN ISO / national variants (for example BS EN ISO 28765:2022 and several national standards bodies’ adoptions). The 2022 edition replaces earlier versions of ISO 28765 (previous edition withdrawn: ISO 28765:2016). Users should consult applicable national adoptions (where present) for any added national forewords or national deviations.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 28765:2022 is an international standard that specifies design, installation and maintenance requirements for vitreous and porcelain enamel coated, bolted cylindrical carbon-steel tanks used for storage or treatment of water, municipal or industrial effluents and sludges.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers tank geometry limits, material and minimum shell thickness, allowable internal pressure and partial vacuum, operational temperature limits, guidance for roofs and foundations, and procedures for installation, inspection and maintenance. It does not cover chemical-reaction vessels or fire resistance.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Design engineers, manufacturers and fabricators of enamel-coated bolted tanks, municipal and industrial water/wastewater authorities, plant designers, inspection and maintenance contractors, and procurement/regulatory bodies specifying tank construction requirements.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: Current — the edition published in October 2022 (Edition 3) is the active version; it supersedes earlier editions (for example the 2016 edition has been withdrawn).
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is part of ISO technical work on enamels and coatings and relates to tank design standards and regional/adopted EN/ national variants (EN ISO and national adoptions). Relevant related documents may include national adoptions (EN ISO equivalents) and other ISO standards addressing tank design, coatings and materials; users should check their national standards body for linked references and mandatory national annexes.
Q: What are the key keywords?
