Full title and description
Flexible cellular polymeric materials — Determination of fatigue by constant-load pounding. This International Standard specifies a laboratory method (constant-load pounding) for assessing loss in thickness and loss in hardness of flexible cellular polymeric materials (notably rubber-latex and polyurethane foams) intended for load-bearing applications such as upholstery.
Abstract
ISO 3385:2014 defines a constant-load pounding test that subjects standard-size test pieces or shaped components of flexible cellular polymeric materials to repeated indentation cycles and records resulting loss in thickness and loss in hardness. Results are intended to be indicative of service performance in load-bearing upholstery applications; the method is not intended as a detailed engineering specification for fatigue apparatus.

Scope
ISO 3385:2014 applies to flexible cellular polymeric materials used in load-bearing upholstery and specifies a laboratory method to evaluate fatigue by measuring loss in thickness and loss in hardness after repeated constant-load pounding. The method is applicable to test specimens cut from slabstock and to shaped components; it aims to provide an assessment indicative of in-service performance rather than to define detailed fatigue-apparatus engineering requirements.
Key topics and requirements
- Measured properties: Loss in thickness and loss in hardness (indentation-based measurements) following repeated pounding cycles.
- Test principle: Constant-load pounding — repeated indentation cycles with a controlled maximum load per cycle.
- Applicability: For rubber-latex and polyurethane flexible cellular materials used in load-bearing upholstery; applies to slabstock test pieces and shaped components.
- Apparatus types: Describes different machine types (simple crank/suspended-weight arrangements and fully controlled electromechanical/pneumatic/hydraulic machines) and basic performance/measurement requirements.
- Test reporting: Results are reported as percentage or absolute losses in thickness and changes in hardness; results are indicative of service performance but may not exactly match in-use degradation.
Typical use and users
Used by material manufacturers, product and upholstery manufacturers, independent testing laboratories, quality assurance teams, and R&D groups to assess comparative fatigue resistance of flexible foams and to support product development, specification and acceptance testing in seating and other load-bearing applications.
Related standards
Related standards in the flexible cellular materials family include ISO 3386 (stress–strain characteristics in compression), ISO 2439 (determination of hardness — indentation technique), ISO 1856 (compression set) and other ISO and EN adoptive standards for flexible cellular polymeric materials; EN ISO 3385:2014 is the European adoption of this standard.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 3385:2014 is an International Standard that specifies a laboratory method (constant-load pounding) for determining fatigue-related loss in thickness and loss in hardness of flexible cellular polymeric materials used in load-bearing upholstery.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers specimen types (slabstock and shaped components), the constant-load pounding test principle, apparatus performance categories, and how to measure and report loss in thickness and hardness as indicators of fatigue performance. It is illustrative of in-service behaviour but is not a detailed engineering design specification for fatigue apparatus.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Foam and upholstery manufacturers, product designers, independent test laboratories, QA/inspection teams, and researchers evaluating the durability and comparative fatigue resistance of flexible cellular materials.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 3385:2014 (edition 4) is the published edition (July 2014). The 1989 edition was withdrawn and replaced by the 2014 edition; the 2014 version is the current published International Standard per ISO records. Standards are subject to periodic review by ISO.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is part of a suite of standards for flexible cellular polymeric materials and cellular materials generally (see ISO 3386 series, ISO 2439, ISO 1856 and other related test methods). It is also adopted regionally as EN ISO 3385:2014.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Key keywords include flexible cellular polymeric materials, foam fatigue, constant-load pounding, loss in thickness, hardness loss, upholstery, indentation testing, polyurethane, rubber-latex.
