Full title and description

Welding and allied processes — Classification of geometric imperfections in metallic materials — Part 2: Welding with pressure. This International Standard collects and classifies the possible geometric imperfections that can occur in welds produced by welding with pressure, and specifies a uniform designation for those imperfections. It covers only the type, shape and dimensions of imperfections caused by pressure welding; metallurgical deviations and effects caused by external loads or environments are excluded.

Abstract

ISO 6520-2:2013 provides a systematic classification and uniform designation for geometric imperfections arising from welding with pressure. The standard illustrates and describes the types, shapes and dimensional characteristics of pressure-welding imperfections so that they can be consistently identified and referenced in specifications, inspection reports and technical documentation. It does not assess the consequences of these imperfections for structural performance, nor does it address metallurgical or post-weld environmental effects.

General information

  • Status: Published
  • Publication date: August 2013
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
  • ICS / categories: 25.160.40 (Welded joints and welds)
  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (ISO 6520-2:2013)
  • Number of pages: 26

Scope

ISO 6520-2:2013 applies to imperfections produced by welding with pressure. It collects and classifies the possible geometric imperfections (their types, shapes and dimensions) and specifies a uniform designation system for those imperfections. The standard excludes metallurgical deviations and imperfections caused by external factors other than the welding operation itself (for example, service loads or environmental damage). Information on the structural consequences or acceptability criteria for specific applications is intentionally not included and is left to the relevant design, contract or inspection standards.

Key topics and requirements

  • Systematic classification of geometric imperfections associated with welding with pressure (nomenclature and designation).
  • Definitions and illustrated shapes for each imperfection type to ensure consistent identification.
  • Dimensional characteristics and presentation of typical measurement descriptors for imperfections.
  • Exclusion of metallurgical defects and non-welding-caused damage from the classification.
  • Annex with relationship between listed imperfections and common welding processes (informative).

Typical use and users

Used by welding engineers, quality and inspection personnel, welding procedure and specification writers, certification bodies, technical authors of contract and procurement documents, and standards committees. Typical applications include preparation of inspection acceptance criteria, production-quality documentation for pressure-welded assemblies, training material for weld inspection, and cross-referencing imperfections in technical drawings and reports.

Related standards

ISO 6520 is a multi-part series. Relevant related documents include ISO 6520-1 (Part 1: Fusion welding — classification of geometric imperfections) and earlier national or regional adoptions (for example EN ISO 6520-2:2013). ISO/TS 17845 provides an alternate designation system referenced in relation to classification matters. ISO 6520-2:2013 replaces ISO 6520-2:2001.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 6520-2:2013 is the second part of the ISO 6520 series and specifies a classification and uniform designation for geometric imperfections occurring in welds produced by welding with pressure.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers the types, shapes and dimensional characteristics of imperfections caused by welding with pressure. It does not cover metallurgical defects or the effects of external service conditions, nor does it provide acceptance criteria or fitness-for-purpose guidance.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Welding engineers, inspectors, quality assurance staff, standards developers, procurement/specification authors and anyone who needs a consistent way to name and illustrate pressure-welding imperfections.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 6520-2:2013 is the published, current edition that supersedes ISO 6520-2:2001. ISO standards are subject to periodic review; consult the national or ISO catalogue for the latest review status if absolute currency must be confirmed.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — ISO 6520 is a multi-part series addressing classification of geometric imperfections in welded joints. Part 1 covers fusion welding; Part 2 covers welding with pressure. Other related documents and technical specifications address alternate designation systems and related topics.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Key keywords include: pressure welding, weld imperfections, geometric defects, classification, ISO 6520, weld inspection, designation system.
