Full title and description

Equipment for crop protection — Antidrip devices — Determination of performance. This International Standard specifies test methods for evaluating the performance of antidrip (anti‑drip / drip‑stop) devices fitted to agricultural sprayer nozzles, including their effect on nozzle flowrates and the opening and closing pressures of the devices.

Abstract

Cancels and replaces ISO 6686:1981. ISO 6686:1995 defines sampling, test conditions and measurement procedures to determine (a) the change in nozzle flowrate when antidrip devices are fitted and (b) the opening and closing pressures of those devices. The method applies to antidrip devices for agricultural sprayer nozzles but excludes hand‑held or hand‑operated sprayers.

General information

  • Status: Published (confirmed).
  • Publication date: 27 April 1995 (Edition 2, 1995).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 65.060.40 (Plant care equipment).
  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (1995) — replaces ISO 6686:1981.
  • Number of pages: 6 pages (official edition).

Key bibliographic and status details above are taken from the ISO bibliographic record and published metadata for ISO 6686:1995.

Scope

Specifies laboratory test procedures to determine the influence of antidrip devices on nozzle output and to establish the opening and closing pressures of the devices. The scope covers antidrip devices intended for agricultural sprayer nozzles used on mounted and trailed sprayers and similar equipment; hand‑held and hand‑operated sprayers are explicitly excluded. The standard provides sampling rules, reference pressures and measurement tolerances to ensure reproducible performance evaluations.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definitions and designation of test nozzles and antidrip device samples (sampling of 20 devices from a batch, with repeat sampling to validate results).
  • Reference test liquid and ambient conditions (temperature ranges for water and room air) and specified reference pressures for flow measurements.
  • Measurement of nozzle flowrates before and after fitting antidrip devices, with specified measurement time and acceptable measurement error limits.
  • Determination of opening and closing pressures of antidrip devices and reporting format for flow and pressure results.
  • Requirements for test equipment (pressure gauges, collection vessels, timing and measurement accuracy) to achieve stated tolerances.

Typical use and users

Used by test laboratories, manufacturers of agricultural sprayer nozzles and antidrip devices, quality assurance personnel, certification bodies and regulatory authorities involved in agricultural equipment standards and environmental protection. Typical applications include product development, conformity testing, type approval and comparison of antidrip device performance across nozzle types and operating pressures.

Related standards

Related work from ISO/TC 23/SC 6 and other sprayer and agricultural machinery standards (for example, environmental and performance requirements for sprayers and nozzle calibration standards) are commonly used alongside ISO 6686:1995; ISO 16119 series and ISO 4254 (safety of agricultural machinery) are examples of related documents to consult for broader machine‑level requirements and test methods.

Keywords

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 6686:1995 is an International Standard that specifies test methods to assess the performance of antidrip devices fitted to agricultural sprayer nozzles, including effects on flowrate and the devices’ opening/closing pressures.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers sampling, required test apparatus and conditions, the procedure for measuring nozzle flowrates with and without antidrip devices, and the method to determine opening and closing pressures. Hand‑held and hand‑operated sprayers are excluded.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Manufacturers of nozzles and antidrip devices, independent test laboratories, certification and conformity assessment bodies, and standards or regulatory authorities concerned with sprayer performance and environmental protection.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 6686:1995 superseded ISO 6686:1981; the 1995 edition is published and has been subject to periodic review. Users should check national standards bodies or ISO for any later revisions or confirmations.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is part of the body of standards developed by ISO/TC 23/SC 6 on equipment for crop protection and is frequently used together with other sprayer and nozzle standards (for example ISO 16119 series and related ISO/EN documents).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Antidrip, nozzle, sprayer, flowrate, opening pressure, closing pressure, test method, agricultural sprayer, ISO 6686.
