Full title and description

ISO 6722-1:2011 — Road vehicles — 60 V and 600 V single-core cables — Part 1: Dimensions, test methods and requirements for copper conductor cables. This International Standard specifies dimensional, material and performance requirements and associated test methods for single-core copper conductor cables intended for use in road vehicle electrical systems (nominal system voltages up to 60 V and additional requirements for cables used at higher voltages up to 600 V).

Abstract

ISO 6722-1:2011 defines conductor constructions, insulation thicknesses and dimensions, temperature class ratings, electrical resistance limits and a suite of electrical, thermal, mechanical and environmental tests that single-core copper automotive cables must pass. It applies to single-core cables for road vehicles and to individual cores in multi-core cables, and it includes special provisions where cables are intended for use at higher voltages (up to 600 V). A technical corrigendum (ISO 6722-1:2011/Cor 1:2012) amended the 2011 edition. The standard was subsequently withdrawn and its content has been migrated into the newer ISO 19642 automotive cable series.

General information

  • Status: Withdrawn (withdrawal recorded by ISO).
  • Publication date: October 2011 (published 2011-10; final publication date 6 October 2011).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 43.040.10 (Electrical and electronic equipment for road vehicles).
  • Edition / version: Edition 4 (2011); amended by Corrigendum 1 (2012).
  • Number of pages: 42 pages (original PDF/page count).

Scope

Specifies dimensions, conductor constructions, insulation wall thicknesses, marking, test methods and minimum performance requirements for single-core copper conductor cables used in road vehicle applications. Covers cables for low-voltage systems (nominally ≤ 60 V d.c. or 25 V a.c.) and provides additional test/requirement clauses for cables intended for higher-voltage applications up to 600 V. Applies to individual cores of multi-core cables where appropriate and establishes temperature class ratings, electrical resistance limits and mechanical/environmental durability tests relevant to automotive use.

Key topics and requirements

  • Defined temperature classes (multiple classes with defined low and high temperature limits for continuous use and short-term exposures).
  • Conductor specifications: plain or coated copper strands, permitted strandings and conductor size ranges, soft-annealed or compacted wire requirements for specified sizes.
  • Insulation and dimensional requirements: nominal insulation wall thicknesses, overall diameters and dimensional tolerances for common conductor sizes.
  • Electrical performance: conductor resistance limits (ohms per kilometre) for specified cross-sectional areas and temperature references.
  • Mechanical and environmental tests: bending (flexing), tensile/elongation, impact, abrasion, cold-bend, heat aging, thermal cycling, and torsion where applicable.
  • Electrical tests: dielectric strength, insulation resistance, voltage endurance and partial discharge where appropriate for higher-voltage variants.
  • Chemical and fluid resistance: oil, fuel, coolant and chemical exposure tests relevant to automotive environments.
  • Flammability and heat propagation considerations applicable to vehicle installations.
  • Family and product marking rules: cable family definitions, traceability and identification (colour coding and marking by agreement).

Typical use and users

Used by automotive OEM electrical design teams, wiring-harness manufacturers, cable and conductor suppliers, test and certification laboratories, component specifiers and procurement teams, and regulatory/compliance engineers. Typical applications include power distribution and signal wiring in passenger cars, commercial vehicles and other road vehicles where reliable single-core copper cables are required.

Related standards

ISO 6722 (earlier editions), ISO 6722-2 (aluminium conductor variants), ISO 14572 (shielding and related applications), and the ISO 19642 series (newer, consolidated automotive cable standard that has taken over much of the ISO 6722 content). The 2011 edition had a corrigendum (ISO 6722-1:2011/Cor 1:2012). For current test methods and detailed requirements users should consult the relevant parts of the ISO 19642 series (for example ISO 19642-2 and other published parts).

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 6722-1:2011 is an International Standard that defined dimensions, conductor constructions, test methods and performance requirements for single-core copper cables used in road vehicles (60 V and 600 V ranges).

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers conductor types and sizes, insulation thicknesses and overall dimensions, electrical resistance limits, temperature classes, and a comprehensive set of mechanical, thermal, electrical and chemical/environmental tests for automotive single-core copper cables; it also includes additional requirements for cables used at higher voltages (up to 600 V).

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Automotive OEMs, wiring harness manufacturers, cable suppliers and test laboratories, procurement and compliance teams, and anyone specifying or validating single-core copper vehicle cables.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 6722-1:2011 is recorded as withdrawn. The content and scope for automotive cables have been consolidated and migrated into the ISO 19642 series of standards. The ISO record shows a withdrawal stage for the 2011 edition (withdrawal noted 24 July 2023); users should consult the ISO 19642 parts for current, active requirements and test methods.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes. ISO 6722-1 was part of the broader ISO 6722 family (with other parts covering different conductor materials and constructions). The automotive cable work has since been reorganized into the ISO 19642 series, which covers test methods, dimensions and requirements across multiple voltage ranges and conductor types.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: automotive cable, single-core, copper conductor, dimensions, insulation, test methods, temperature class, conductor resistance, vehicle wiring, ISO 6722, ISO 19642.
