Full title and description

ISO 27913:2024 — Carbon dioxide capture, transportation and geological storage — Pipeline transportation systems. Guidance and requirements for design, construction, operation, conversion and monitoring of rigid metallic pipeline systems used to transport CO₂ streams (gaseous and dense phases) from capture sites to geological storage or other uses.

Abstract

This International Standard specifies requirements and recommendations for the safe and effective pipeline transportation of CO₂ streams. It covers onshore and offshore rigid metallic pipelines and pipeline systems, including conversion of existing pipelines for CO₂ service, stream quality considerations, flow assurance, integrity management, health, safety and environmental aspects, and monitoring/measurement for transportation to geological storage or other uses. Transportation by ship, rail or road is excluded.

General information

  • Status: Published (international standard)
  • Publication date: 17 October 2024 (corrected versions issued September 2025)
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO), developed by ISO/TC 265
  • ICS / categories: 13.020.40 (Carbon capture, transportation and storage)
  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (2024)
  • Number of pages: 46

Scope

Applies to pipeline transportation of CO₂ streams from capture sites to storage facilities or other uses (e.g., CO₂-EOR). It covers rigid metallic pipelines and pipeline systems, onshore and offshore routes, conversion of existing pipelines to CO₂ service, and transport of CO₂ in gaseous and dense phases. The standard addresses CO₂ stream quality assurance, converging streams from multiple sources, flow assurance and monitoring, and HSE aspects specific to CO₂ transport. It does not cover transport by ship, rail or road.

Key topics and requirements

  • Pipeline materials selection, design and construction suitable for CO₂ service (including considerations for dense-phase CO₂, impurities and phase behaviour).
  • Requirements for conversion of existing pipelines to CO₂ transport (assessment, remediation and qualification).
  • Flow assurance: handling phase changes, hydrate formation, corrosion and erosion risks, and mitigation measures.
  • CO₂ stream quality management and specifications to limit deleterious impurities and protect system integrity.
  • Operational requirements: compression, dehydration, pigging, metering and custody/flow measurement.
  • Integrity management, inspection, testing, maintenance and fitness-for-service principles adapted to CO₂.
  • Health, safety and environmental (HSE) measures, emergency preparedness and leak detection/monitoring.
  • Monitoring, instrumentation and data needed for safe transport and for verification in storage-chain projects.
  • Requirements for documentation, risk assessment and regulatory/compliance interfaces.

Typical use and users

Used by CCS project developers, pipeline designers and engineers, operators and owners of CO₂ transmission systems, EPC contractors, technical consultants, regulatory agencies and permitting authorities, asset managers performing integrity assessments, and organizations involved in measurement, monitoring and verification of CO₂ transport and storage chains.

Related standards

Relevant documents from ISO/TC 265 and other collections include ISO 27914 (geological storage), ISO 27916 (CO₂ storage using enhanced oil recovery — CO₂‑EOR), ISO/TR 27912 (capture systems overview), ISO/TR 27915 (quantification and verification), ISO/TR 27925 and ISO/TR 27926 (flow assurance and EOR-to-storage transition), ISO 27917 (vocabulary) and ISO/TR 27929 (transport of CO₂ by ship). National and regional adoptions (EN/BS/other) based on ISO 27913 have been published in 2025.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 27913:2024 is an International Standard that specifies requirements and recommendations for pipeline systems used to transport carbon dioxide (CO₂) from capture sites to storage or other uses.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers rigid metallic onshore and offshore pipelines and pipeline systems for CO₂ in gaseous and dense phases, including design, materials, conversion of existing lines, flow assurance, CO₂ stream quality, integrity management, monitoring and HSE measures. It excludes transport by ship, rail or road.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: CCS project developers, pipeline and process engineers, operators, EPC contractors, consultants, regulators and organizations responsible for measurement, monitoring and verification across the CO₂ transport and storage chain.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The 2024 edition (Edition 2) is the current edition; it replaces the 2016 edition. Corrected versions of the 2024 edition were issued in September 2025.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is part of the ISO/TC 265 family of standards on carbon dioxide capture, transportation and geological storage (including ISO 27914, ISO 27916, ISO/TR 27912, ISO/TR 27915 and related technical reports and specifications).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: CO2, CCS, pipeline transport, dense phase CO2, stream quality, flow assurance, integrity management, monitoring, leak detection.
