Full title and description

SN 527-80 — Инструкция по проектированию технологических стальных трубопроводов Ру до 10 МПа (Guidelines for the design of steel process piping systems for nominal pressure up to 10 MPa). Документ устанавливает требования к проектированию стальных технологических трубопроводов (диаметром до 1400 мм) для транспортирования жидких и газообразных сред при номинальном давлении до 10 МПа и рабочей температуре от −70 °C до +450 °C.

Abstract

SN 527-80 provides prescriptive guidance and technical rules for selection, routing, structural arrangement, strength calculation, supports and compensation of thermal deformations, materials, corrosion protection, testing and insulation of industrial steel process piping up to 10 MPa. It also contains appendices with recommended clearances, drain/vent sizing and material recommendations.

General information

  • Status: Partially superseded / repealed in part; some sections were withdrawn with later normative acts (sectional withdrawal effective 01.01.1990).
  • Publication date: Published by Stroyizdat in 1981; introduced into force 01 January 1982.
  • Publisher: Стройиздат (Moscow); approved by Gosstroy USSR (04 August 1980).
  • ICS / categories: Pipelines / process piping (commonly mapped to ICS pipeline/piping categories such as 23.040.01).
  • Edition / version: Designation SN 527-80 (original 1980 designation); includes Amendment No.1 (01.01.1987).
  • Number of pages: 47 pages (typical editions).

Scope

Applies to the design of technological steel pipelines with nominal pressure up to 10 MPa and nominal diameters up to 1400 mm, intended to convey a wide range of liquid and gaseous process media (raw materials, intermediates, products, reagents, etc.), and covers design temperature ranges approximately −70 °C to +450 °C. The instruction addresses routing, supports, connections, strength calculations, corrosion protection, insulation, testing and commissioning requirements.

Key topics and requirements

  • Classification of process pipelines and assignment of functional/operational categories.
  • Route planning and methods of laying (estakady, supports, galleries, channels, tunnels).
  • Constructive requirements: joints, flanges, valves, placement of fittings and accessories.
  • Attachment, supports, hangers and anchors; provisions for thermal expansion and compensation devices.
  • Strength calculations and fatigue checks for pressure, thermal and extra loads.
  • Corrosion protection methods and recommended materials for piping components.
  • Thermal insulation requirements and referencing of later thermal-insulation rules where applicable.
  • Testing, cleaning, commissioning, and inspection/acceptance procedures.
  • Additional requirements for special conditions (seismic zones, permafrost).

Typical use and users

Used by process and piping engineers, plant designers and project offices in chemical, petrochemical, oil & gas and heavy industrial projects for design reference, material selection and layout rules; also used by inspection, maintenance and safety teams for retrofits and assessments of older installations designed to this instruction.

Related standards

Portions of SN 527-80 were superseded or replaced by later normative acts (for example SNiP / СНиП and sectoral rules); section(s) related to thermal insulation were superseded by СНиП 2.04.14-88 (thermal insulation of equipment and pipelines). Companion guidance documents include "Пособие по оптимальному выбору труб из углеродистой и низколегированной стали для технологических трубопроводов на Ру до 10 МПа (к СН 527-80)". For modern design practice, international codes such as ASME B31.3 (Process Piping) and current national rules are typically consulted.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: SN 527-80 is a Soviet-era instruction (СН 527-80) titled "Инструкция по проектированию технологических стальных трубопроводов Ру до 10 МПа" — guidance for the design of steel process piping systems up to 10 MPa.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers classification, routing and layout, constructive requirements (joints, valves, flanges), supports and anchors, thermal compensation, strength and fatigue calculations, corrosion protection, insulation, testing and commissioning, plus appendices with clearances, drain/vent sizing and material recommendations.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Historically, Soviet and post‑Soviet project organizations, process and piping engineers, plant designers and inspection bodies used SN 527-80 as a normative design reference for industrial piping; today it may still be referenced for legacy systems or historical documentation.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: SN 527-80 has been at least partially superseded or repealed; parts of it lost force around 01 January 1990 (some clauses replaced by later СНиП/SNiP rules, e.g., СНиП 2.04.14-88 for thermal insulation). For contemporary projects, current national codes and international standards (e.g., ASME B31.3) should be used.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: SN 527-80 forms part of the family of Soviet instructions (СН) and related design documents and companion guidance (for example the 1984/1983 guidance on optimal pipe selection for Ru up to 10 MPa that is explicitly linked to SN 527-80). It is referenced alongside other СН/СНиП and sectoral technical guides.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Key keywords include process piping, steel pipelines, nominal pressure 10 MPa, pipeline layout, supports and anchors, thermal compensation, corrosion protection, testing, СН 527-80.
