Full title and description
ISO 10364:2024 — Structural adhesives — Determination of the pot life (working life) of multi-component adhesives. This International Standard specifies laboratory methods to determine the pot life (working life) of multi-part adhesives so that compliance with a specified minimum working life can be assessed.
Abstract
This document describes different test methods for determining pot life (working life) of multi-component adhesives (especially epoxy- and polyurethane-based systems) by means such as viscosity or bond-strength measurements. The methods do not necessarily give identical results and some methods may not be suitable for certain acrylic-based adhesives; some methods can also be applied to one-part humidity-reactive adhesives and to non-structural adhesives. Results shall be reported with reference to the method used.

Scope
ISO 10364:2024 specifies laboratory test methods to determine the pot life (working life) of multi-component adhesives so users can verify whether an adhesive meets a stated minimum working life. The scope emphasises multi-part adhesives (particularly epoxy and polyurethane types), notes limitations for some acrylic systems, and indicates that different test methods may yield different numerical pot-life values; therefore the method used must be recorded with results.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition and determination of pot life / working life for multi-component adhesives.
- Test methods based on viscosity change and/or bond-strength reduction at specified intervals.
- Specification of test conditions, sample preparation and measurement intervals to ensure repeatability.
- Requirement to report results with explicit reference to the test method used (since methods can give non-identical outcomes).
- Applicability notes: especially suitable for epoxy- and polyurethane-based adhesives; some acrylic-based adhesives may not be suitable for the described methods; some methods also apply to humidity-reactive one-part systems and non-structural adhesives.
Typical use and users
Used by adhesive manufacturers and formulators, quality-control and materials-testing laboratories, R&D teams, and industries that specify structural adhesives (automotive, aerospace, marine, construction, composites). The standard helps product development, batch acceptance testing, supplier verification, and material specifications where a defined working life is required.
Related standards
ISO 10364 has been previously published in earlier editions (1993, 2007, 2015) and the 2024 edition revises those prior versions. Related documents include other ISO and national standards covering adhesive test methods, viscosity measurement techniques, and bond-strength tests used in conjunction with pot-life determinations.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 10364:2024 is an International Standard that specifies laboratory methods for determining the pot life (working life) of multi-component adhesives.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers procedures (for example viscosity and bond-strength based methods), test conditions and reporting requirements needed to assess whether a multi-part adhesive meets a specified minimum working life. It notes applicability (especially epoxy and polyurethane systems) and limitations (some acrylic-based adhesives).
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Adhesive manufacturers and formulators, materials-testing and QC laboratories, R&D engineers, and end-users in sectors that rely on structural adhesives (automotive, aerospace, marine, construction, composites) to verify or specify working life.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 10364:2024 is the current edition (Edition 4, published January 2024) and replaces the 2015 edition. Earlier editions include those published in 2015, 2007 and 1993.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: ISO 10364 is a standalone test-method standard focused on pot-life determination but is related by subject matter to other ISO standards on adhesive test methods, viscosity measurement, and mechanical testing of bonded joints; it is maintained by ISO/TC 61/SC 11.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Pot life, working life, multi-component adhesive, viscosity, bond strength, epoxy, polyurethane, test method, structural adhesive.
