Full title and description

ISO 10791-7:2020 — Test conditions for machining centres — Part 7: Accuracy of finished test pieces. This international standard defines standard machining tests and the characteristics and dimensions of finished test pieces to assess the cutting accuracy of machining centres (3- to 5-axis, horizontal or vertical spindles, or machines with universal heads). It establishes tolerances and maximum acceptable values for test results under finishing (cutting) conditions and includes provisions for five‑axis freeform test pieces.

Abstract

This document specifies, by reference to relevant parts of ISO 230, families of machining tests for machining centres (stand‑alone or integrated in flexible manufacturing systems) and associated acceptance tolerances for general‑purpose and normal‑accuracy machines. It is applicable, wholly or in part, to numerically controlled milling and boring machines whose configuration and movements are compatible with the described tests. The standard defines standard test pieces (dimensions and features) used for finishing cutting tests and includes an annex introducing a freeform test piece for five‑axis flank milling of freeform surfaces.

General information

  • Status: Published (confirmed).
  • Publication date: 29 January 2020.
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 25.040.10 — Machining centres.
  • Edition / version: Edition 3 (2020).
  • Number of pages: 44 pages.

Scope

ISO 10791-7:2020 specifies test procedures and standard test pieces for evaluating the accuracy of finished workpieces produced by machining centres operating under finishing (cutting) conditions. Tests and tolerances are given for machines with horizontal or vertical spindles and machines with various types of universal heads, for standalone machines or those in flexible manufacturing systems. The standard addresses machining centres with 3 to 5 simultaneous axes and may be applied, in whole or in part, to numerically controlled milling and boring machines whose components and movements are compatible with the described tests. Annex A provides a freeform test piece for five‑axis applications.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition of families of cutting/finishing tests for machining centres (horizontal/vertical spindle, universal heads).
  • Specification of standard finished test pieces: geometry, dimensions and characteristic features for measurement.
  • Acceptance tolerances and maximum permissible values for test results corresponding to general‑purpose and normal‑accuracy machining centres.
  • Reference to and integration with ISO 230 series (notably ISO 230‑1) for test code and measurement principles.
  • Applicability to 3‑ to 5‑axis machining and guidance for five‑axis freeform flank‑milling test pieces (Annex A).
  • Procedures for conducting finishing cutting tests and evaluating measured deviations against specified tolerances.
  • Guidance for applying tests to numerically controlled milling and boring machines when configurations permit.

Typical use and users

This standard is used by machine tool manufacturers, acceptance and test laboratories, OEM quality and production engineers, metrology and inspection departments, machine tool purchasers, research and development groups investigating machine performance, and certification bodies. Typical uses include factory acceptance testing, acceptance checks at delivery, benchmarking of machine accuracy, R&D validation of multi‑axis machining processes, and quality assurance for precision production.

Related standards

ISO 10791‑7 is part of the ISO 10791 series (test conditions for machining centres) and is closely associated with the ISO 230 series (test code for machine tools). Relevant related parts/standards include ISO 10791‑1, ISO 10791‑2, ISO 10791‑3, ISO 10791‑4, ISO 10791‑5, ISO 10791‑6, ISO 10791‑8 (and other parts within the ISO 10791 family), and ISO 230‑1 (Test code — Part 1: geometric accuracy of machines operating under no‑load or quasi‑static conditions). Users should consult the other ISO 10791 and ISO 230 parts for complementary geometric, kinematic and measurement tests and procedures.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 10791‑7:2020 is an international standard that specifies finishing (cutting) test procedures and standard finished test pieces, including dimensions and tolerances, to assess the cutting accuracy of machining centres (3–5 axes) under finishing conditions.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers families of finishing tests for horizontal and vertical spindle machining centres and machines with universal heads, the characteristics and dimensions of standard test pieces, measurement and evaluation of machining accuracy, and acceptance tolerances for general‑purpose and normal‑accuracy machines. Annex A addresses a five‑axis freeform test piece.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Machine tool manufacturers, quality and metrology departments, acceptance/test laboratories, OEM production engineers, machine purchasers, and research groups working on multi‑axis machining and machine tool performance.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 10791‑7:2020 is the current edition (3rd edition), published 29 January 2020. It replaced the 2014 edition and, at the time of its periodic review, remains the valid/confirmed edition.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes. It is part of the ISO 10791 series (Test conditions for machining centres) and is intended to be used alongside other parts of ISO 10791 and the ISO 230 series (Test code for machine tools) for comprehensive machine assessment.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: machining centres, finished test piece, cutting accuracy, finishing tests, tolerances, 3‑ to 5‑axis, freeform test piece, ISO 230, machine tool testing, metrology.
