Full title and description
ISO 12696:2022 — Cathodic protection of steel in concrete. This International Standard specifies performance requirements, monitoring and acceptance criteria for cathodic protection systems applied to steel reinforcement (including prestressing steel) embedded in cement-based concrete for new and existing structures.
Abstract
This document sets out the technical and performance requirements for the design, installation, commissioning, monitoring and assessment of cathodic protection systems intended to control corrosion of steel in concrete. It applies to atmospherically exposed, buried, immersed and tidal elements, and covers uncoated and organic-coated steel reinforcement; it excludes systems that cannot meet the protection criteria or that lack the required performance-monitoring provisions.

These bibliographic and status details are taken from the ISO record for ISO 12696:2022.
Scope
The standard applies to cathodic protection of steel embedded in cement-based concrete for both new and existing building and civil-engineering structures. It is applicable to carbon steel reinforcement and prestressing steel (uncoated or organic-coated) in atmospheric, buried, immersed and tidal exposure conditions. The document is not intended for reinforced concrete containing electrically conductive fibres (for example carbon-fibre reinforcement), and it excludes galvanic anodes and short-term patch-repair anode systems that cannot demonstrate compliance with the protection and monitoring criteria set out in the standard.
Key topics and requirements
- Performance criteria for cathodic protection of steel in concrete (acceptance limits and verification of protection effectiveness).
- Design requirements for impressed-current systems (materials, anode types and placement, rectifier specification).
- Monitoring and instrumentation requirements, including provision of performance monitoring systems to assess protection across intended areas.
- Installation, commissioning and routine and periodic inspection and maintenance procedures.
- Limitations and exclusions (e.g., electrically conductive fibre-reinforced concrete, use of galvanic anodes for some local repairs).
- Guidance annex on principles and application of cathodic protection to steel in concrete (informative).
These key topics reflect the standard's technical scope and the main requirements engineers and asset owners must follow.
Typical use and users
ISO 12696:2022 is used by corrosion engineers, structural and civil engineers, materials specialists, asset owners and managers (bridges, marine structures, parking structures, wastewater infrastructure), contractors and specifiers preparing procurement documents, and testing/inspection bodies responsible for commissioning and verification of cathodic protection systems. National standards bodies and certification bodies also reference the standard when adopting regional or national variants (for example EN/BS/UNE adoptions).
Related standards
ISO 12696:2022 supersedes earlier editions of ISO 12696 (including the 2016 and 2012 editions) and has been adopted identically in various regional/national publications (for example EN ISO 12696:2022, BS EN ISO 12696:2022, UNE‑EN ISO 12696:2022). Users should also consider related standards and guidance on concrete repair, corrosion testing, material specifications and electrical safety when specifying cathodic protection systems.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 12696:2022 is the International Standard that defines requirements for cathodic protection systems applied to steel embedded in cement-based concrete.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers design, installation, commissioning, monitoring, maintenance and performance-acceptance criteria for cathodic protection of steel reinforcement and prestressing steel in concrete for a range of exposure conditions; it also sets out what is excluded (for example electrically conductive fibre-reinforced concrete and certain galvanic-anode patch repairs).
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Corrosion engineers, structural and civil engineers, asset owners/operators (bridges, marine and wastewater structures, parking garages), contractors, inspection bodies and standards committees preparing national adoptions.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 12696:2022 is the current (third) edition published in 2022 and supersedes earlier editions (including the 2016 edition).
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: ISO 12696 is a standalone International Standard focused on cathodic protection of steel in concrete; regional and national bodies may publish identical adoptions (EN ISO, BS EN ISO, UNE‑EN ISO, etc.) that are part of respective collections of standards on corrosion and concrete technology.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Cathodic protection, steel in concrete, reinforced concrete, corrosion protection, impressed-current systems, monitoring, anodes, prestressing steel.
