Full title and description
ISO 12947-1:1998 — Textiles — Determination of the abrasion resistance of fabrics by the Martindale method — Part 1: Martindale abrasion testing apparatus. Specifies requirements for the Martindale testing apparatus and auxiliary materials used with the test methods in Parts 2–4 of ISO 12947.
Abstract
This part of ISO 12947 defines the apparatus, fixtures and auxiliary materials required to perform Martindale abrasion tests on textiles. It sets out the construction, dimensions, loading and consumable requirements for the Martindale tester so that Parts 2–4 (test procedures and result assessment) can be carried out reproducibly on woven and knitted fabrics, pile textiles up to 2 mm pile height and nonwovens.
General information
- Status: Published (International Standard; confirmed in review).
- Publication date: 20 December 1998 (Edition 1, 1998).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO); developed by ISO/TC 38/SC 24.
- ICS / categories: 59.080.30 (Textile fabrics).
- Edition / version: Edition 1 (1998). Technical corrigendum ISO 12947-1:1998/Cor 1:2002 issued.
- Number of pages: 12 pages (main publication).
Scope
Specifies requirements for the Martindale abrasion-testing apparatus and its auxiliary materials for use with the test methods described in ISO 12947-2, ISO 12947-3 and ISO 12947-4. Applicable to apparatus intended for testing woven and knitted fabrics, pile textiles with pile height up to 2 mm and nonwoven fabrics. The standard ensures reproducible apparatus performance and compatibility with the procedural parts of the ISO 12947 series.
Key topics and requirements
- Design and construction requirements for Martindale abrasion testing machines (dimensions, movement mechanism and tolerances).
- Specification of specimen holders, clamps and sample mounting arrangements.
- Requirements for abradants and abrasive fabrics/consumables used with the apparatus.
- Load application system and specimen loading specifications to ensure consistent contact pressure.
- Auxiliary materials and conditioning recommendations required to obtain reproducible test results.
- Reference to procedural parts (Parts 2–4) for test methods, reporting and assessment criteria.
Typical use and users
Used by textile test laboratories, quality control and assurance teams in textile and upholstery manufacturing, material R&D laboratories, certification bodies and standards committees. It is a reference for suppliers of Martindale testing equipment, instrument calibration services and procurers of test protocols for wear and abrasion performance evaluation.
Related standards
ISO 12947 is a multipart series. Key related parts include ISO 12947-2 (Test method — Determination of specimen breakdown/appearance change), ISO 12947-3 (Test method — Determination of mass loss) and ISO 12947-4 (Assessment of appearance change). National/adopted versions and amendments exist (for example BS EN ISO versions) and a technical corrigendum to Part 1 was published in 2002.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 12947-1:1998 specifies the requirements for the Martindale abrasion testing apparatus and its auxiliary materials used to determine the abrasion resistance of textile fabrics by the Martindale method.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers apparatus design, specimen mounting, required auxiliary materials and consumables, and general apparatus-related conditions needed to perform the Martindale tests described in the procedural parts of ISO 12947 (Parts 2–4).
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Textile test laboratories, manufacturers (textiles, upholstery, technical textiles), instrument manufacturers and calibration/service providers, and conformity assessment bodies use this standard to ensure reproducible abrasion testing.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The 1998 edition (Edition 1) remains the published edition for Part 1; a technical corrigendum was issued in 2002. The status has been subject to periodic five‑year reviews and the edition has been confirmed in review processes since publication.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — ISO 12947 is a multipart series. Part 1 defines the apparatus; Parts 2–4 define test methods and result assessments (including mass loss and appearance change).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Martindale, abrasion, abrasion resistance, textile testing, specimen mounting, abradant, mass loss, appearance assessment, ISO 12947.
