Full title and description
ISO 13473-2:2002 — Characterization of pavement texture by use of surface profiles — Part 2: Terminology and basic requirements related to pavement texture profile analysis. Defines terms, expressions and profile-related parameters for analysis of pavement texture on roads and airfields and gives basic requirements for their use.
Abstract
This part of ISO 13473 defines the terminology, expressions and parameters used in pavement texture profile analysis (microtexture, macrotexture and megatexture ranges as represented by surface profiles). It explains profile representations anticipated to be useful in modelling tyre/road noise emission, tyre/road friction, rolling resistance and tyre wear, and gives basic requirements for use of the terms and parameters. Profile analysis of machined surfaces and of road unevenness is excluded.

Scope
Specifies terminology and basic requirements related to analysis of pavement surface texture using measured longitudinal surface profiles. Applies to paved road and airfield surfaces and supports the use of profile-derived descriptors for applications such as acoustic modelling, friction assessment, rolling-resistance studies and wear evaluation. Excludes profile analysis of machined (manufactured) surfaces and the analysis of road unevenness (which is covered by other standards).
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and clear terminology for profile-based texture descriptors (microtexture, macrotexture, megatexture ranges as relevant to profile analysis).
- Specification of profile representations and parameters used to quantify pavement texture from surface profiles.
- Basic requirements for consistent use and interpretation of profile-derived texture parameters.
- Guidance on the intended application of profile descriptors for tyre/road noise, friction, rolling resistance and tyre wear modelling.
- Explicit exclusions and cross-references to standards addressing machined-surface profile analysis and road unevenness measurement.
Typical use and users
Used by highway and airport pavement engineers, acoustics and tyre/vehicle noise specialists, materials laboratories, test-track operators, researchers studying tyre–road interaction, manufacturers of profilometers and test equipment, and agencies responsible for pavement performance assessment and specification.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 13473-2:2002 is the second part of the ISO 13473 series that defines terminology and basic requirements for characterizing pavement texture from measured surface profiles.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers terms, expressions and profile-based parameters for pavement texture analysis and provides basic requirements for their consistent use. It supports applications such as acoustic modelling, friction and rolling-resistance assessment, and tyre wear studies.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Pavement and airport engineers, acousticians, tyre and vehicle noise researchers, test laboratories, manufacturers of profilometry equipment, and agencies setting pavement performance/specification criteria.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The 2002 edition (Edition 1) remains the published version and was reviewed and confirmed as current in 2024. It has not been superseded as of its last confirmation.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — ISO 13473 is a multi-part series addressing pavement texture characterization by surface profiles (for example Part 1 on mean profile depth, Part 3 on profilometer specification/classification and other parts covering megatexture and related procedures).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Pavement texture, surface profile, profilometer, microtexture, macrotexture, megatexture, mean profile depth, tyre/road noise, friction, rolling resistance.
