Full title and description
Textiles — Bursting properties of fabrics — Part 2: Pneumatic method for determination of bursting strength and bursting distension. This part specifies a pneumatic pressure method for measuring the bursting strength and the bursting distension of textile fabrics (knitted, woven, nonwoven and laminated), and is intended for conditioned or wet test specimens.
Abstract
This standard describes the pneumatic (air pressure) burst test procedure used to determine the maximum pressure a fabric will withstand before bursting and the corresponding distension. It notes that, for pressures up to about 800 kPa, results from pneumatic and hydraulic burst testers are not significantly different, while hydraulic apparatus may be preferred for very high bursting pressures.

Scope
Applies to the pneumatic method for determination of bursting strength and bursting distension of textile fabrics. The procedure is applicable to knitted, woven, nonwoven and laminated fabrics and can be suitable for other fabric-production techniques; testing is defined for specimens in the conditioned or wet state. The standard also compares pneumatic and hydraulic methods and provides guidance on suitability (pneumatic suitable for most apparel-level pressures; hydraulic preferred for specialty textiles requiring very high bursting pressures).
Key topics and requirements
- Principle of the pneumatic burst test (air pressure applied until failure)
- Apparatus requirements and calibration (pneumatic burst tester components and pressure control)
- Specimen size, preparation, and conditioning (including wet-state testing)
- Test procedure and rate of pressure application
- Measurement and reporting of bursting strength (pressure at failure) and bursting distension (deformation)
- Guidance on comparability with hydraulic method (noting equivalence up to ~800 kPa)
Typical use and users
Used by textile test laboratories, manufacturers of apparel and technical textiles, quality assurance and R&D departments, certification bodies and standards organizations for product development, acceptance testing and quality control of fabrics where resistance to internal pressure and multidirectional stresses is a performance parameter.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 13938-2:2019 is an international standard that specifies a pneumatic (air pressure) method to determine the bursting strength and bursting distension of textile fabrics.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the test principle, apparatus, specimen preparation and conditioning, test procedure, measurement, and reporting for pneumatic bursting tests; it also provides guidance on comparability with the hydraulic method.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Textile testing laboratories, fabric and garment manufacturers, R&D groups, QA departments and conformity assessment bodies use it for product development, specification compliance and quality control.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 13938-2:2019 is the current published edition (Edition 2, published November 2019) and was reviewed/confirmed in ISO’s review process; it replaces the earlier 1999 edition.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 2 of the ISO 13938 series on bursting properties of fabrics; Part 1 covers the hydraulic method (ISO 13938-1:2019).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Bursting strength, bursting distension, pneumatic burst test, textile fabrics, test method, ISO 13938.
