Full title and description
Ships and marine technology — Drainage systems on ships and marine structures — Part 1: Sanitary drainage-system design (ISO 15749-1:2004). This part of ISO 15749 gives requirements and guidance for planning and designing sanitary drainage systems that evacuate wastewater from accommodation and commissary areas on ships and marine structures.
Abstract
ISO 15749-1:2004 addresses the design of sanitary drainage systems on ships and marine structures, covering classification of wastewater, hygienic and environmental requirements, system layout including collection tanks, and requirements for testing and maintenance. It is intended to be used together with other parts of the ISO 15749 series; drainage of weather decks, cargo holds and swimming pools is covered in Part 5. The standard explicitly excludes pipe systems carrying oily or chemically contaminated wastewater capable of forming flammable gas/oxygen mixtures.
General information
- Status: Published — International Standard (confirmed).
- Publication date: May 2004 (ISO edition 1 — 2004).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO), via ISO/TC 8/SC 3.
- ICS / categories: 47.020.30 (Ships and marine technology — Drainage systems).
- Edition / version: Edition 1 (2004).
- Number of pages: 20 pages (ISO published version).
Scope
Specifies principles and minimum requirements for planning and designing sanitary drainage systems that collect and discharge wastewater from accommodation and service/commissary areas on ships and marine structures. It does not cover drainage of weather decks, cargo holds or swimming pools (handled by other parts of the series) and excludes systems for oily or chemically contaminated wastewater that may form flammable mixtures.
Key topics and requirements
- Classification of sanitary wastewater and determination of design flows and loadings for sizing pipes and tanks.
- Hygienic and environmental requirements for containment, handling and discharge of wastewater.
- Design principles for sanitary drainage layouts, collection tanks and venting where applicable.
- Materials, pipework slopes, connections and arrangements appropriate for marine service.
- Inspection, testing, commissioning and maintenance provisions for reliable operation at sea.
- Graphical symbols and plan-drawing conventions for sanitary drainage systems (informative guidance).
Typical use and users
Used by naval architects, ship designers, marine engineers, shipyards, equipment suppliers, classification societies and regulatory authorities involved in the design, installation and certification of sanitary drainage systems on commercial and offshore vessels and marine structures.
Related standards
Part of the ISO 15749 series; see ISO 15749-2 to ISO 15749-4 for complementary guidance and ISO 15749-5 for drainage of weather decks, cargo holds and swimming pools. It is developed under ISO/TC 8/SC 3 and is referenced in various national/adopted versions (EN/ISO adoptions) addressing marine drainage system requirements and related marine environmental protection rules.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 15749-1:2004 is an international standard that specifies design requirements and guidance for sanitary drainage systems on ships and marine structures, covering wastewater from accommodation and commissary areas.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers classification of sanitary wastewater, sizing and layout of drainage piping and collection tanks, hygienic and environmental requirements, testing and maintenance, and drawing conventions; it does not cover oily/chemically contaminated wastewater or drainage of weather decks, cargo holds and swimming pools (covered in Part 5).
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Naval architects, shipbuilders, marine and systems engineers, classification societies, regulatory bodies and equipment suppliers involved in marine sanitation and wastewater arrangements.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 15749-1:2004 remains the published version and was reviewed and confirmed by ISO in 2024 (confirmation recorded 6 June 2024), so it is current (not superseded) as of that confirmation.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 1 of the ISO 15749 series (other parts address additional drainage topics including specific areas such as weather decks, cargo holds and swimming pools in Part 5 and further technical details in Parts 2–4).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Sanitary drainage, marine wastewater, ships, drainage design, collection tanks, hygiene, maintenance, ISO 15749.
