Full title and description

St ISO 22002-1-2025 — Prerequisite programmes on food safety — Part 1: Food manufacturing. This International Standard specifies requirements, to be used together with ISO 22002-100, for establishing, implementing and maintaining prerequisite programmes (PRPs) to control food safety hazards in food manufacturing operations.

Abstract

ISO 22002-1:2025 provides sector-specific PRP requirements for food manufacturing. It describes operational conditions and measures that support a food safety management system (FSMS) and the control of hazards in the production environment. The document is intended to be used in conjunction with the common PRP requirements in ISO 22002-100 and is applicable to organizations of all sizes within the food manufacturing sector; it does not address other parts of the food supply chain.

General information

  • Status: Published.
  • Publication date: July 2025 (ISO listing: 2025-07).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Scope

Defines requirements that, together with ISO 22002-100, set out prerequisite programmes (PRPs) required for the control of food safety hazards specifically in food manufacturing. The scope is limited to manufacturing activities and does not apply to other supply-chain sectors (those are covered by other parts of the ISO 22002 series). It also allows for justified exclusions provided they do not adversely affect food safety.

Key topics and requirements

  • Establishing, documenting and maintaining sector-specific PRPs for food manufacturing (premises, utilities, equipment, personnel hygiene, pest control, cleaning and sanitation, etc.).
  • Integration and use together with ISO 22002-100 (common PRPs) and as a sector application for ISO 22000 FSMS requirements.
  • Requirements for justification of any exclusions from PRP clauses where applicable.
  • Alignment and update from the former technical specification ISO/TS 22002-1:2009 to a full International Standard, reflecting current terminology and practices.
  • Support for audits, certification and regulator / customer confidence through standardized sector-specific PRPs.

Typical use and users

Used by food manufacturers, FSMS implementers, auditors and certification bodies, regulatory agencies, and suppliers to the manufacturing sector. Typical users implement this standard to define and demonstrate effective prerequisite programmes that support hazard control and conformity with ISO 22000-based food safety management systems. Consultants and training providers also use it as a reference for sector-specific PRP requirements.

Related standards

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 22002-1:2025 is an International Standard specifying prerequisite programme requirements for food manufacturing to support food safety management systems.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers sector-specific operational PRPs (premises, equipment, personnel, cleaning, pest control, utilities, etc.) required to control food safety hazards in food manufacturing, and is to be used together with ISO 22002-100 for common PRPs.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Food manufacturers, FSMS implementers, auditors, certification bodies, regulators, suppliers to manufacturing and consultants/trainers working on food safety programmes.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: Current — published in July 2025 as Edition 1. It replaces the earlier technical specification ISO/TS 22002-1:2009 by upgrading sector requirements to a full International Standard.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is Part 1 of the ISO 22002 series of standards (sector-specific PRPs). ISO 22002-100 provides the common PRP requirements; other parts cover catering, packaging, transport & storage, feed, retail and related sectors.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: PRPs (prerequisite programmes), food safety, food manufacturing, FSMS, ISO 22002, ISO 22000, sanitation, hygiene, hazard control.
