Full title and description
ISO 2262:1984 — General purpose thimbles for use with steel wire ropes — Specification. Defines requirements for manufactured thimbles intended for use with steel wire ropes (not for fibre ropes), including dimensional and suitability criteria for reeving applications within specified rope grades and diameters.
Abstract
This International Standard (Edition 2, 1984) cancels and replaces ISO 2262:1972. It applies to thimbles suitable for use with steel wire ropes complying with ISO 2408, for ropes with a maximum tensile grade of 1770 MPa and with nominal diameters from 4 mm to 60 mm. The standard excludes thimbles for fibre ropes and does not include reeving thimbles of the solid type.
General information
- Status: Published (confirmed on review; current as of the last ISO confirmation cycle).
- Publication date: June 1984 (Edition 2).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 53.020.30 (Lifting accessories / related equipment).
- Edition / version: Edition 2 (1984).

Scope
Specifies the characteristics and requirements for general-purpose thimbles used with steel wire ropes that meet ISO 2408 requirements. The scope covers thimbles for reeving applications with rope tensile grade up to 1770 MPa and rope diameters from 4 mm to 60 mm. It expressly excludes thimbles intended for fibre ropes and does not cover certain solid-type thimbles or specialized reeving thimbles. The standard is intended to ensure interchangeability, safe service fit, and compatibility with commonly used steel wire ropes.
Key topics and requirements
- Applicability: thimbles for steel wire ropes complying with ISO 2408 (general-purpose steel wire ropes).
- Size range: thimbles dimensioned for ropes with nominal diameters from 4 mm up to 60 mm.
- Mechanical compatibility: intended for use with ropes of maximum tensile grade 1770 MPa (as stated in the standard).
- Exclusions: thimbles for fibre ropes; certain reeving/solid thimbles not covered by this specification.
- Normative relationships: references and alignment with wire-rope manufacturing and testing requirements (e.g., ISO 2408 and related wire/rope standards) and with industry practice for lubrication and core materials where applicable.
- Expectations (typical content): dimensional specifications and tolerances, material/performance criteria, marking/identification, and inspection/acceptance checks (as appropriate for a product specification of this scope).
Typical use and users
Intended users include manufacturers of thimbles and lifting accessories, rigging and lifting equipment designers, procurement professionals specifying end fittings for wire ropes, inspection and maintenance personnel, maritime and offshore rigging specialists, crane and hoist equipment suppliers, and standards librarians. Typical uses are in reeving, forming wire rope eyes, and as a protective lining for wire rope loops in lifting, mooring, towing and general rigging applications.
Related standards
Key related standards referenced by or commonly used alongside ISO 2262 include ISO 2408 (requirements for steel wire ropes), ISO 4346 (lubricants for steel wire ropes), and other ISO/TC 105 deliverables covering wire, rope construction and testing. These documents provide the rope manufacture, testing, lubrication and core-material context for correct selection and use of thimbles.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 2262:1984 is an ISO product specification that sets out requirements for general-purpose thimbles used with steel wire ropes (edition 2, published June 1984).
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers thimbles suitable for steel wire ropes (diameters 4–60 mm) with a maximum tensile grade of 1770 MPa, specifying characteristics needed for safe reeving and use; it excludes thimbles for fibre ropes and certain solid or specialized thimbles.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Manufacturers of thimbles and rope fittings, rigging designers, procurement and maintenance personnel in lifting, marine, offshore, construction and transport industries, and conformity/inspection bodies.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 2262:1984 (Edition 2) replaced ISO 2262:1972. The 1984 edition has been reviewed and confirmed in ISO’s review cycle (ISO indicates the publication was last reviewed and confirmed in 2020), so the 1984 text remains the current edition under ISO’s records. Users should check national adoption or amendments for local practice.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It sits within the family of ISO standards for steel wire ropes and lifting accessories developed by ISO/TC 105 and is typically used alongside rope standards such as ISO 2408 and related documents on rope wires, cores and lubricants.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Thimbles; rope thimbles; reeving; wire rope fittings; steel wire rope accessories; lifting and rigging; ISO 2262; product specification.
