Full title and description
ISO 22893:2022 — Space systems — Software product assurance (SPA). This international standard defines software product assurance requirements (processes and products) to be applied for the development, maintenance and operation of software for space systems, giving a uniform basis for SPA activities across the software life cycle.
Abstract
This document defines a set of software product assurance requirements in terms of processes and products to be used for the development, maintenance and operation of software for space systems. It provides a uniform basis for defining the software product assurance activities to be applied and maintained throughout the whole software life cycle, from project conception until software retirement. The standard mainly targets the space software segment and critical ground-segment software that directly interfaces with space systems.

Scope
ISO 22893:2022 specifies software product assurance requirements for processes and products used throughout the software life cycle for space systems. It applies primarily to the space software segment (on-board flight software) and to critical ground-segment software that directly interfaces with the space segment. The standard is intended to define minimum processes and management guidelines so that safety, dependability and quality assurance activities are integrated and maintained from conception to retirement of the software.
Key topics and requirements
- Software product assurance overview: objectives and organization of SPA activities.
- Software product assurance management: planning, control, risk management, supplier selection and procurement.
- Software process assurance: assurance activities across system requirements, software requirements, architecture, design, construction, testing, delivery, operation and maintenance.
- Support processes: documentation, safety and security analysis, critical item handling, configuration management, metrics, verification and validation, reviews, audits and problem resolution.
- Organizational processes: management, infrastructure, training, reuse, evaluation of automatic code generation and model-based engineering considerations.
- Software product quality assurance: measures and activities to assure reliability, safety, security and overall product quality for space software.
- Requirements for supplier monitoring, tool support environment, and assessment/improvement processes.
Typical use and users
Used by space agencies, prime contractors, subsystem and software suppliers, quality and product assurance engineers, project managers, systems engineers and procurement or contract teams involved in space-system software development, integration and operations. It is applied to on-board flight software projects and to critical ground-segment software that interfaces directly with spacecraft.
Related standards
Normative and related documents commonly referenced alongside ISO 22893 include ISO 9000 (quality management fundamentals and vocabulary), ISO 10795, ISO 14300-2 (space programme management — product assurance) and ISO 16404 (space systems — requirements management). ISO 22893 also complements software lifecycle and engineering standards (for example ISO/IEC software lifecycle process standards) and national/sector space standards and best practices used by agencies and primes.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 22893:2022 is an international standard that establishes software product assurance requirements for software used in space systems, covering processes and products across the software life cycle.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers SPA objectives and organization, management and process assurance activities (requirements, architecture, design, construction, testing, delivery, operations, maintenance), support processes (documentation, safety/security analysis, configuration management, verification/validation, audits) and organizational topics (training, tools, reuse, evaluation of automatic code generation and model-based practices).
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Space agencies, spacecraft and ground-segment prime contractors, software suppliers, product assurance/quality engineers, systems and software engineers, project managers and procurement teams involved in space software development and operation.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 22893:2022 was published in April 2022 as the first edition and is the current published International Standard (as of its 2022 publication).
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is closely related to other space programme and product assurance standards (for example ISO 14300-series documents and ISO 16404) and complements general software lifecycle standards. It is intended to work alongside other ISO and sector-specific space standards and agency regulations.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Space systems, software product assurance, SPA, software safety, software dependability, software quality assurance, verification, validation, configuration management, risk management.
