Full title and description

Space systems — Paints and varnishes — Processes, procedures, and requirements for coating materials and coatings. This International Standard sets out selection principles, verification processes, surface preparation and application procedures, and quality-control requirements for coating materials and applied coatings used in spacecraft and associated hardware for long active lifetimes.

Abstract

This document establishes main requirements for the choice of coating materials and coatings for space applications; processes and procedures for verification of coating materials; processes of surface preparation and quality control of painted surfaces; and quality control of applied coatings. It also describes causes of possible coating defects and is intended for use by manufacturers of space-system products (various spacecraft surfaces, on‑board systems, facilities, tools and electronic component base products) where long active lifetimes are required.

General information

  • Status: Published.
  • Publication date: 13 January 2023 (ISO publication: January 2023).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 49.140 (Space systems and operations).
  • Edition / version: Edition 1 — 2023 (first edition, published January 2023).
  • Number of pages: 17 pages (official ISO edition length).

Scope

This standard applies to coating materials and coatings used in space systems and their constituent parts. It covers requirements for selection, verification, surface preparation, application and in‑service quality control of coatings intended for spacecraft and associated hardware with long active lifetimes. The scope is aimed at manufacturers, integrators and suppliers of space hardware, and addresses coating issues across a variety of substrates and electronic component bases encountered in space applications.

Key topics and requirements

  • Selection criteria for coating materials suitable for space environments (outgassing, thermal cycling, radiation resistance).
  • Verification processes and procedures for coating materials prior to acceptance and use.
  • Surface preparation processes and quality‑control measures before painting or coating.
  • Application procedures and workmanship requirements for reproducible, defect‑minimizing coatings.
  • Inspection, testing and acceptance criteria for applied coatings, and identification of common defect causes and mitigation.
  • Documentation and traceability requirements to support long active lifetimes of coated items in space systems.

Typical use and users

Used by aerospace manufacturers, coating suppliers, systems integrators, quality engineers, materials engineers, test laboratories and procurement specialists working on spacecraft, payloads, subsystems and ground support hardware. Typical applications include external and internal spacecraft surfaces, thermal-control coatings, protective varnishes for electronic components, and specialty coatings on structural or functional components requiring long service life in space.

Related standards

Related documents include other ISO standards and technical reports addressing space systems, materials testing and clean environments — for example, standards on space system design and reliability from ISO/TC 20, the ISO 14644 series on cleanrooms and controlled environments (relevant to coating application and contamination control), and ISO standards addressing coatings evaluation and degradation. National adoptions (e.g., BS ISO 23230:2023) and supplier specifications often reference this standard in aerospace coatings programs.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 23230:2023 is an international standard specifying processes, procedures and requirements for coating materials and applied coatings used in space systems (paints and varnishes for spacecraft and associated hardware).

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers selection and verification of coating materials, surface preparation and application procedures, inspection and quality control of applied coatings, and descriptions of common defect causes—targeting coatings intended for long active lifetimes in space environments.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Aerospace and space‑system manufacturers, coating and material suppliers, systems integrators, quality and materials engineers, and test laboratories involved in specifying, applying or qualifying coatings for spacecraft and related hardware.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: As published in January 2023, ISO 23230:2023 is the current (first) edition and is listed as published by ISO; users should check for any subsequent revisions or national amendments before relying on the standard for contract or design work.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is a standalone ISO International Standard developed under ISO/TC 20/SC 14 (space systems engineering and operations). It is related in subject matter to other ISO standards for space systems, materials testing and contamination/cleanroom control but is not itself a numbered series part (it may be referenced alongside other ISO space‑system standards).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Space systems, paints, varnishes, coatings, surface preparation, coating verification, quality control, spacecraft, outgassing, defect analysis.
