Full title and description

ISO 24807:2023 — Recreational diving services — Requirements for rebreather diver training — Decompression diving to 100 m. This International Standard specifies required competencies, evaluation criteria and training‑provision requirements for rebreather diving programmes that include decompression dives to 100 m using helium‑containing breathing mixtures.

Abstract

This document sets out the competencies a trainee must achieve, the evaluation criteria for those competencies, and the organisational and instructional requirements under which training is delivered for rebreather decompression diving to 100 m. It is written to complement the general recreational diving service requirements given in ISO 24803.

Scope

ISO 24807:2023 applies to training programmes for rebreather divers whose planned dives require mandatory decompression stops and use helium‑containing breathing mixtures; specifically it covers dives to a maximum depth of 100 m. The standard defines the competencies to be attained, how those competencies are to be evaluated, and the organisational/instructional conditions under which training should be delivered, in addition to the general recreational diving service requirements of ISO 24803.

Key topics and requirements

  • Specification of minimum competencies for rebreather divers performing decompression dives to 100 m (theory, planning, equipment use, emergency procedures).
  • Evaluation and assessment criteria for demonstrating competence (knowledge tests, practical skills, supervised dives).
  • Requirements for training programme structure, instructor qualifications and student prerequisites.
  • Operational and safety considerations for helium‑containing breathing mixtures and decompression management on rebreathers.
  • Supplementary requirements that sit alongside the general service/provider requirements in ISO 24803.

Typical use and users

Primary users are recreational diving training organisations and specialty programme authors, rebreather instructor trainers, certification bodies, dive operators offering technical/rebreather courses, and national/regional bodies that regulate or recognize dive training standards. The standard is used to design course syllabi, set instructor prerequisites, and to provide a benchmark for certification and quality assurance of deep rebreather training.

Related standards

ISO 24807:2023 is part of the ISO recreational diving services family. Directly related documents include ISO 24803 (general requirements for recreational diving service providers), ISO 24801 series (training of recreational scuba divers — levels 1–3), ISO 24802 series (instructor training), and other speciality-training standards such as ISO 11107 (enriched‑air nitrox training). These provide the general, level‑based and speciality frameworks that ISO 24807 supplements for rebreather decompression training.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 24807:2023 is an International Standard that defines requirements for rebreather diver training programmes covering decompression dives to 100 metres; it specifies competencies, assessment criteria and programme delivery conditions for such training.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers the knowledge, skills and assessment required for safe rebreather decompression diving to 100 m, instructor and programme requirements, and the organisational conditions for delivering training that includes mandatory decompression and helium‑containing breathing mixes.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Diving training agencies, rebreather instructor trainers, dive operators who provide technical/rebreather training, certification bodies, and regulators or national standards bodies referencing ISO guidance for recreational diving services.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 24807:2023 is published and current (first edition, published October 2023). There is no later ISO edition recorded as a replacement at the time of publication.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it forms part of the ISO recreational diving services series (ISO 24801–24803 and related speciality standards) and is intended to be used alongside ISO 24803 (general provider requirements) and the part‑based training standards for recreational diving.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Rebreather, decompression diving, training requirements, helium mixture, diver competencies, instructor qualifications, recreational diving services, ISO 24807.
