Full title and description
ISO 26262-7:2018 — Road vehicles — Functional safety — Part 7: Production, operation, service and decommissioning. This part of ISO 26262 defines requirements and planning activities that apply to safety-related electrical/electronic (E/E) systems and their components during production, in-service operation, maintenance/service and decommissioning for series-production road vehicles (excludes mopeds and certain special-purpose vehicles).
Abstract
This document provides a framework of requirements and activities to ensure functional safety is maintained when safety-related E/E systems are released to production and while they are in service (operation, maintenance/service and decommissioning). It addresses planning, production controls, change management, in-service monitoring and handling of safety-related failures or field data, and the related work products needed to demonstrate and maintain functional safety across the production and operational lifecycle.
General information
- Status: Published (Edition 2); to be reviewed/revised under ISO process.
- Publication date: December 2018 (published 2018-12-17).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 43.040.10 (Electrical and electronic equipment for road vehicles).
- Edition / version: Edition 2 (2018).
- Number of pages: 14 pages (ISO edition); national/adopted versions and publishers sometimes show different pagination (e.g., 26–28 pages).
Scope
Applies to safety-related systems containing one or more electrical and/or electronic (E/E) systems installed in series-production road vehicles (excluding mopeds and some special-purpose vehicles). It specifies requirements for activities and planning to ensure functional safety during production, operation, service (maintenance) and decommissioning of safety-related E/E systems and their components. The part also describes tailoring of the safety lifecycle for alterations to systems already released to production and for integration of systems developed to different processes. It does not cover hazards not caused by E/E malfunctioning behaviour (for example general fire, toxicity unless directly caused by malfunction) nor the nominal performance of E/E systems.
Key topics and requirements
- Production planning and production controls necessary to preserve functional safety (including production release criteria and traceability).
- Change and configuration management for components and systems during production and in-service life.
- Requirements for service and maintenance activities to avoid introducing or masking safety faults (service procedures, training, tools).
- In-service monitoring and collection/analysis of field data, reporting and handling of failures or safety incidents.
- Planning for decommissioning, safe removal or disabling of safety-related functions.
- Requirements for competence, documentation and work products to demonstrate and maintain the safety case across production and operation.
- Guidance on tailoring the safety lifecycle for alterations to existing production items and integration of legacy systems.
Typical use and users
Used by vehicle manufacturers (OEMs), Tier-1 and Tier-2 suppliers, functional safety engineers, production and quality engineers, service and maintenance organizations, validation teams, and certification/compliance assessors to plan and demonstrate that functional safety is preserved from production through the in-service life and decommissioning of E/E safety-related systems.
Related standards
Part of the ISO 26262 series (functional safety for road vehicles); relates to other parts (concept, system, hardware, software, support processes, production/operation, and ASIL-oriented requirements across the lifecycle). It is commonly used alongside ISO 26262 parts 1–6 and 8–10 and complements standards addressing safety of the intended functionality (SOTIF / ISO 21448) and domain-specific product standards.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 26262-7:2018 is Part 7 of the ISO 26262 series that specifies requirements for production, operation, service (maintenance) and decommissioning of safety-related electrical/electronic systems in series-production road vehicles.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers planning and process requirements to preserve functional safety when systems are released to production and while they are in service — including production controls, change/configuration management, service procedures, in-service data monitoring, and decommissioning planning.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: OEMs, suppliers (Tier‑1/2), safety engineers, production and quality teams, service/maintenance organizations, and assessors involved in demonstrating and maintaining functional safety across the product lifecycle.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The current published edition is ISO 26262-7:2018 (Edition 2). The part is scheduled for periodic review and a working draft to update/replace the 2018 edition has been prepared (ISO/WD 26262-7.2), so users should check for any published revisions or updates when preparing compliance evidence.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is one part of the ISO 26262 functional safety series for road vehicles and is intended to be used together with the other parts of ISO 26262 to cover the complete safety lifecycle.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Functional safety, production, operation, service, decommissioning, automotive E/E systems, safety lifecycle, change management, in-service monitoring, safety case, ASIL.
