Full title and description
ISO 3402:1978 — Tobacco and tobacco products — Atmospheres for conditioning and testing. (Russian: «Табак и табачные изделия — Атмосферы для кондиционирования и испытаний»). This International Standard specified the standard atmosphere (temperature and relative humidity) and general conditions to be used when conditioning and testing samples and test pieces of tobacco and tobacco products prior to analysis or further testing.
Abstract
ISO 3402:1978 defined the environmental conditions for conditioning and testing tobacco and related materials, to ensure reproducible test results by bringing samples to a specified moisture/temperature equilibrium. The 1978 edition has since been withdrawn and replaced by later revisions of ISO 3402.

Scope
The standard specified the standard atmospheres (nominal temperature and relative humidity) and related conditioning arrangements to be used for bringing tobacco and tobacco-product samples to equilibrium prior to testing. It was applicable to tests on tobacco, tobacco products and materials used in manufacture where prior conditioning is necessary, and it noted that atmospheres for some products (for example certain cigars, pipe tobacco or snuff) may require different conditions or separate standards.
Key topics and requirements
- Specification of standard conditioning atmospheres (temperature and relative humidity) used for tobacco testing.
- Requirements for sample equilibration/conditioning prior to analysis to achieve reproducible moisture content and test conditions.
- Guidance on applicability and limitations — which tobacco products and test methods the atmosphere is intended for, and where separate conditions may be needed.
- Reference to committee responsibility (ISO/TC 126) and subsequent revisions that update or replace the 1978 requirements.
These topics are summarized from ISO catalogue descriptions and standard summaries.
Typical use and users
Used by analytical and quality laboratories, tobacco manufacturers, research institutes and conformity assessment bodies that perform physical or chemical testing on tobacco materials and products. The standard was used to ensure consistent pre-test conditioning so that moisture-sensitive test results (e.g., moisture content, physical property tests) were comparable between laboratories and over time.
Related standards
ISO 3402:1978 was later revised and superseded by subsequent editions of ISO 3402 (notably revisions published in 1991 and 1999) and more recently by updated editions (ISO 3402 has a 2023 revision noted in ISO records). It is part of the ISO/TC 126 work programme on tobacco and tobacco products; users should consult the latest ISO 3402 edition for current requirements.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 3402:1978 is an International Standard that specified atmospheres and general conditions for conditioning and testing tobacco and tobacco-product samples prior to testing, to ensure reproducible results.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the specification of standard conditioning atmospheres (nominal temperature and relative humidity), and general guidance on bringing samples to equilibrium before physical or chemical testing. It indicated that some tobacco forms might need different conditions.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Testing and quality-control laboratories, tobacco manufacturers, research organizations and regulators involved in tobacco-product testing and analysis.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 3402:1978 is withdrawn and has been superseded by later revisions of ISO 3402 (editions in 1991, 1999 and a 2023 revision referenced in ISO records). For current and binding requirements, consult the latest ISO 3402 edition.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It forms part of the ISO/TC 126 family of deliverables on tobacco and tobacco products; ISO 3402 has been maintained through successive editions to reflect updated practices for conditioning and testing tobacco.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Tobacco, conditioning, testing, standard atmosphere, temperature, relative humidity, sample equilibration, ISO 3402.
