Full title and description
ISO 7086-1:2019 — Glass hollowware in contact with food — Release of lead and cadmium — Part 1: Test method. This part of ISO 7086 specifies a laboratory test method to determine the release (migration) of lead and cadmium from glass hollowware intended for preparation, cooking, serving and storage of food and beverages; it excludes glass‑ceramic ware and glass flatware and also covers certain glass packaging articles used in the food industry.
Abstract
This document gives a standardized procedure for sampling, conditioning and testing glass hollowware to measure the amount of lead and cadmium that can be released into foodstuffs under defined conditions. It is intended to support product assessment, regulatory compliance and laboratory comparability for food‑contact glassware.

Scope
Specifies the test method for measuring the release of lead and cadmium from glass hollowware in contact with food and beverages. Applicable items include glassware used for preparation, cooking, serving and storage and certain glass packaging articles; glass ceramic ware and glass flatware are excluded. The method defines sample preparation, test conditions, analytical determination and reporting to enable consistent assessment of migration of Pb and Cd from hollow glass articles.
Key topics and requirements
- Defined scope and exclusions for glass hollowware intended to contact food.
- Requirements for sample selection, conditioning and pre‑treatment before testing.
- Specified test simulants, contact conditions (time/temperature) and test volumes appropriate to hollowware geometry.
- Analytical determination of released lead and cadmium (commonly by AAS, ICP‑OES/ICP‑MS or equivalent validated instrumental methods) and reporting of results.
- Normative references and laboratory practice references (example: ISO 1042, ISO 3585, ISO 3696 are cited as relevant laboratory/reference standards).
- Reporting format and interpretation intended to support compliance assessment and comparison with permissible limits (permissible limits are addressed in the companion part of the series).
Typical use and users
Used by test and calibration laboratories, manufacturers of glass hollowware, quality and compliance teams, regulatory agencies and product safety assessors to evaluate migration of lead and cadmium from food‑contact glassware, for internal quality control, product development, conformity assessment and regulatory compliance checks.
Related standards
Closely related documents include ISO 7086‑2 (permissible limits, current edition 2000, with a DIS under development to replace it), and other food‑contact migration standards such as ISO 6486‑1:2019 (ceramic and glass dinnerware — release of lead and cadmium — test method). Normative laboratory references cited by the standard include ISO 1042, ISO 3585 and ISO 3696.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 7086‑1:2019 is the international test‑method standard that specifies how to measure the release of lead and cadmium from glass hollowware intended to be in contact with food.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers sample handling, defined test conditions (simulants, time, temperature and volumes appropriate to hollowware), analytical determination and reporting for lead and cadmium release; it excludes glass‑ceramic ware and flatware and is intended for preparation, cooking, serving and storage applications.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Test laboratories, glassware manufacturers and quality/ regulatory teams use it for product testing, conformity assessment and safety verification.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 7086‑1:2019 is the current published edition (published 9 September 2019) and it replaced the earlier ISO 7086‑1:2000. For permissible limits, ISO 7086‑2:2000 remains the published limits document although a draft revision (ISO/DIS 7086‑2) has been developed; check national or ISO resources for the latest status of part 2.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — ISO 7086 is a multi‑part series. Part 1 (this document) defines the test method; Part 2 covers permissible limits (ISO 7086‑2:2000, with a draft revision in progress). Related ISO standards dealing with lead/cadmium release from other tableware categories include ISO 6486‑1:2019.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Glass hollowware, food contact materials, migration testing, lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), test method, ISO 7086, analytical chemistry (AAS/ICP), ISO/TC 166.
