Full title and description
STB DIN EN ISO 24431:2017-07 — Gas cylinders — Seamless, welded and composite cylinders for compressed and liquefied gases (excluding acetylene) — Inspection at time of filling. German adoption of EN ISO 24431:2016 specifying inspection requirements to be carried out when transportable gas cylinders are filled.
Abstract
This standard sets out the inspection requirements at the moment of filling for transportable gas cylinders made of steel, aluminium-alloy (Type 1) and composite cylinders (Types 2–5) for compressed and liquefied gases. It defines visual and functional checks, acceptance/rejection criteria and special provisions for composite cylinders, and identifies exclusions (for example acetylene cylinders, bundles, MEGCs and battery vehicles). It is the German adoption of EN ISO 24431:2016.

Scope
Applies to inspection at time of filling for seamless or welded transportable gas cylinders of steel or aluminium-alloy (Type 1) and composite transportable gas cylinders (Types 2 to 5) used for compressed or liquefied gases with a water capacity up to 150 litres. It may be applied to individual cylinders with capacities between 150 l and 450 l when inspected and filled as single items. The standard does not apply to acetylene cylinders, cylinder bundles, tubes, multiple‑element gas containers (MEGCs) or battery vehicles. The document can be applied to LPG in general use; specific LPG applications may require additional reference to ISO 10691. For cylinders manifolded in bundles, refer to ISO 11755.
Key topics and requirements
- Inspection at time of filling: visual, functional and safety checks to ensure cylinder integrity before, during and after filling.
- Applicable cylinder types: Type 1 (steel, aluminium-alloy) and composite Types 2–5, up to 150 l water capacity (with conditional application up to 450 l for single items).
- Exclusions and special cases: excludes acetylene cylinders, bundles, MEGCs, battery vehicles; cross-references to ISO 10691 (LPG) and ISO 11755 (bundles).
- Acceptance and rejection criteria: defined defects, allowable damage limits, valve and fitting checks, markings and legibility.
- Composite-cylinder specific provisions: additional requirements for inspection before, during and after filling, and guidance on tare determination (informative annex).
- Operational guidance for filling stations and filling personnel: procedures, record keeping and responsibilities for cylinder inspection at fill points.
Typical use and users
Used by cylinder manufacturers, gas supply companies, filling-station operators, inspection and testing bodies, authorised filling personnel, safety and compliance officers, and regulators to ensure safe filling practices and to determine acceptance/rejection of cylinders at the point of filling.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: It is the German adoption (DIN EN ISO 24431:2017-07) of EN ISO 24431:2016, specifying inspection requirements for transportable gas cylinders at the time they are filled.
Q: What does it cover?
A: Inspection procedures and acceptance/rejection criteria for seamless, welded and composite transportable gas cylinders (Types 1–5) for compressed and liquefied gases, primarily for cylinders up to 150 l water capacity; it excludes acetylene cylinders, bundles, MEGCs and battery vehicles and references other standards for specific cases (e.g., ISO 10691 for some LPG applications).
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Cylinder manufacturers, gas suppliers, filling-station operators and their personnel, inspection bodies and regulatory/compliance authorities responsible for safe filling and handling of gas cylinders.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The document is the published German adoption of EN ISO 24431:2016 (issued July 2017). The underlying international standard is ISO 24431:2016 (2nd edition). Standards are subject to periodic review; users should check with their national standards body for the latest status if up-to-date confirmation is required.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It forms part of the family of standards addressing transportable gas cylinders and their safe handling (ISO/TC 58 work), and is linked by cross-reference to standards such as ISO 10691 (LPG) and ISO 11755 (bundled cylinders). It is one element in the broader EN/ISO suite covering design, testing, inspection and transport of gas cylinders.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Gas cylinders, inspection at filling, transportable cylinders, composite cylinders, compressed gases, liquefied gases, LPG, acceptance criteria, DIN EN ISO 24431.
