Full title and description
AS 1892.1:2018 — Portable ladders, Part 1: Performance and geometric requirements. Sets out performance, dimensional and geometric requirements and test criteria for the design and manufacture of portable ladders made from metals, plastics, reinforced plastics, composites, timber and engineered wood; consolidates earlier Part 1 (metal) and Part 3 (reinforced plastic) requirements into a single document.
Abstract
This Standard specifies minimum performance and geometric requirements, classification and test methods required for portable ladders intended for domestic and industrial use. It provides dimensional limits, load classes, stability and marking requirements, and additional provisions for work platform ladders and higher-stability designs. The edition was prepared by the joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand committee SF‑034 and issued as an Australian Standard in 2018.
General information
- Status: Current.
- Publication date: 28 September 2018.
- Publisher: Standards Australia.
- ICS / categories: 97.145 (Ladders / portable ladders).
- Edition / version: 1st edition (AS 1892.1:2018).
- Number of pages: 125 pages.
Scope
Applies to the design, construction and performance of portable ladders (single, extension, multi‑purpose, stepladders, trestle ladders and combinations) manufactured from metal, timber, plastics, reinforced plastics, composites and engineered wood. It defines functional dimensions, strength and stability requirements, classification by intended use and load, required markings and labelling, and the relevant test methods and reporting. The Standard replaces earlier AS/NZS Part 1 and Part 3 documents and consolidates test and labelling requirements for several ladder types.
Key topics and requirements
- Performance requirements: strength, deflection and load‑bearing criteria for rungs, stiles and joints.
- Geometric requirements: functional dimensions, rung spacing, rung/profile shapes and clearances.
- Stability and classification: definitions of load classes (domestic, industrial), and a 'higher stability' classification with additional test criteria.
- Test methods and reporting: type tests for design verification, specific procedures for different materials and ladder types, and required test reports.
- Marking and labelling: mandatory identification, duty rating, safe use information and extension/locking device warnings.
- Specific provisions for work platforms and accessories where applicable; certain accessories (e.g., levellers, stabilisers) may be covered by separate requirements or excluded from some clauses.
Typical use and users
Used by ladder manufacturers and designers to develop compliant products; by test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies for type testing; by procurement and safety officers to select suitable ladders for workplaces; and by regulators and product-safety authorities to define mandatory product requirements. It is also a reference for workplace health & safety teams, tradespeople and building managers concerned with safe selection and labeling of ladders.
Related standards
Part of the AS 1892 series. Closely related documents include AS 1892.2 (Portable ladders — Part 2: Timber), AS/NZS 1892.5 (Portable ladders — Selection, safe use and care) and regional/international ladder standards (for example EN 131 series). AS 1892.1:2018 supersedes AS/NZS 1892.1:1996 and AS/NZS 1892.3:1996 (reinforced plastic).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: AS 1892.1:2018 is an Australian Standard titled "Portable ladders, Part 1: Performance and geometric requirements" that defines performance, dimensional and test requirements for a wide range of portable ladders.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers design and manufacture requirements for portable ladders made from metal, plastics, reinforced plastics, composites, timber and engineered wood — including strength, geometric limits, stability, classification, marking and type test methods. Some ladder accessories may be addressed separately.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Manufacturers, test laboratories, conformity assessors, procurement and safety officers, workplace health and safety practitioners, and regulators use this Standard to design, verify, select and regulate ladders.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: AS 1892.1:2018 is the current edition (published 28 September 2018) and supersedes earlier AS/NZS 1892.1:1996 and AS/NZS 1892.3:1996 for the covered subject matter. National or regional regulations may reference either this edition or earlier editions depending on jurisdictional transition rules.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 1 of the AS 1892 Portable Ladders series. Other parts include AS 1892.2 (Timber) and AS/NZS 1892.5 (Selection, safe use and care). The series covers materials, testing and safe use guidance across ladder types.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Keywords: portable ladders, ladder testing, performance, geometry, stability, load class, marking, AS 1892.1:2018.
